The Position

Pharmaceutical & Solid State Development is part of Pharma Technical Development and is situated in Basel Switzerland.

Our key expertise is the development of robust and economic processes for drug substances with tailor-made solid-state properties and patient-centric formulations for the synthetic molecule portfolio of projects from early clinical studies to commercialization. We advance the design and delivery of transformative medicines by combining particle engineering characterization and formulation development - ensuring optimal drug performance manufacturability and patient-centric solutions from molecule to medicine.

As an intern you will support the Pharmaceutical & Solid State Development department by driving our digital transformation shifting the focus from building isolated ad hoc tools to integrating expanding and supporting a single centralized digital interface. You will play a key role in consolidating existing applications and data products into a cohesive ecosystem aligned with our core scientific and business workflows providing our science teams with a streamlined digital-first operational environment.

The Opportunity

  • Interface Unification: Consolidate existing standalone digital applications into a single cohesive user interface structured around specific pharmaceutical development business logic.

  • Feature Support & Optimization: Maintain the unified platform implement critical upgrades and develop newly requested features within the existing ecosystem rather than creating disconnected tools.

  • Advanced Data Engineering: Design and build reliable data pipelines robust data products and secure backend integrations to ensure seamless high-performance data flow across the central platform.

  • Sustainability & Code Auditing: Audit refactor and restructure legacy codebase to meet enterprise-level standards for scalability documentation and reliable operational handovers.

  • AI-Ready Architecture: Set up an AI-ready unified application and data architecture designed for seamless future integration with Roche internal agentic AI tools.

  • Collaboration & Workflow Mapping: Translate complex scientific workflows and processes into structured digitalrequirements by collaborating closely with scientists and project owners.

Who you are

You are a University student (or you graduated within 12 months before the start date) in Computer Science Software Engineering Data Science Bioinformatics or a related technical discipline with a strong interest in applying software engineering and data pipelines to scientific and pharmaceutical development challenges.

Furthermore you are interested in using and sharing your knowledge as part of your Internship in a modern working environment. Your further profile for this position:

  • Advanced Programming & Full-Stack Development: Strong proficiency in full-stack web development framework expertise (e.g. modern frontend/backend frameworks) API design and clean software architecture.

  • Data Science & Engineering: Experience in core data engineering automating robust data pipelines and embedding analytical models directly into frontend systems.

  • Systems Thinking: Proven ability to translate complex scientific workflows and business logic into structured user-friendly digital solutions.

  • Software Sustainability: Familiarity with version control (Git) code auditing and writing clean scalable and fully documented code.

  • Self-sufficient & Collaborative: A team-oriented problem-solving personality with self-sufficient work habits and a passion for working in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Communication: Excellent proficiency in English; ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical scientific stakeholders.

This internship opportunity is one of a number of positions we offer in the department per semester and is not suitable for writing a Bachelor/Master/Diploma thesis.

The interviews will take place on an interview day with all considered candidates and representatives of the department.

The application deadline is 23.08.2026. All successful final candidates will be invited to a virtual interview day which will take place on 14.10.2026.

The Internship will start in May to July 2027 and has a duration of 9 to 12 months (alignedwith the project duration please indicate your preferred start date and availability in yourapplication)
