Projectleader for health data harmonization

We are looking for a motivated and organised project leader to play a key role in shaping the future of digital health this position you will be central to an EU-funded project that aims to harmonise clinical cancer data and make them available for large-scale research.

TEF-Health (Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health) is an EU-funded initiative under the Digital Europe Program that builds a pan-European infrastructure for testing and validating AI and digital technologies in healthcare. The project unites leading European research institutions and hospitals; Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab serves as a central node of the Swedish consortium. Within TEF-Health we are running a Demonstrator project on data harmonisation transforming clinical cancer data to the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM) to enable comparable interoperable and reusable datasets for research and AI development.

SciLifeLab is a national infrastructure for Life Science in Sweden that provides state-of-the-art technologies and data-driven research support and plays a central role in making biological and clinical data FAIR (findable accessible interoperable reusable).

You will be embedded in Päivi Östlings group at SciLifeLab Data Center and Karolinska Institutet which focuses on precision medicine and clinical data integration. The group drives several national and European projects in health data and collaborates closely with clinical care providers and industry.

The position is shared with Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Center (KCCC) that is one of Europes leading cancer centers integrating world-class clinical care and research. The Project Unit at KCCC coordinates strategic initiatives to advance cancer research and improve patient outcomes. Your co-supervisor at the hospital is Eva Jolly project manager at the KCCC Project Unit who brings deep clinical and operational expertise in oncology.

As a data harmonisation project leader you will:

• Lead and coordinate the transformation of cancer-related clinical datasets to the OMOP CDM (OMOPification) including terminology mapping (ICD SNOMED local codes) and ETL processes.
• Collaborate closely with clinicians data engineers and researchers at KI and Karolinska University Hospital to identify and harmonise relevant cancer datasets.
• Coordinate data access data governance issues and approval processes in collaboration with the hospitals data governance organisation.
• Contribute to TEF-Health Demonstrator activities including documentation reporting and presenting results to the project steering group and EU partners.
• Support knowledge transfer and training on OMOP CDM and data harmonisation for internal and external stakeholders.
• Help establish scalable routines and processes enabling broader adoption of the OMOP CDM within the cancer research network.
• Participate in meetings workshops and conferences related to health data and the OHDSI/OMOP ecosystem.

• University degree (minimum Bachelors level) in health informatics bioinformatics data science biomedicine or a related field.
• Documented experience working with OMOP CDM or similar health data standards (e.g. HL7 FHIR ICD SNOMED CT).
• Experience handling clinical or health-related databases.
• Experience in project coordination and the ability to work independently and in close collaboration with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

• Experience in ETL pipeline development and data quality review using OHDSI tools (ATLAS Achilles DQD).
• Knowledge of cancer-related datasets oncology registries or electronic health record systems.
• Experience working in an academic or clinical research environment.
• Proficiency in Swedish.
• Experience with EU-funded research projects.

Fixed-term employment for one year. The position is divided according to need at Karolinska Institutet and at Karolinska University Hospital. The main employment will be with the Karolinska Institutet. The position may start on a part-time basis 20 % with the possibility to increase to full engagement over time. Start date by agreement. Salary is set individually in accordance with KIs salary criteria. The project is funded by TEF-Health (EU Digital Europe Programme).
