Security Privacy and Trust in Intelligent and Distributed Systems
The rapid digitalization of society together with the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices cloud computing and next-generation communication networks has greatly expanded the cyber threat landscape. Ensuring the security privacy trust and resilience of intelligent and distributed systems has therefore become one of the most important scientific and technological challenges of our time.
This Ph.D. project aims to advance the state of the art in network and information security by developing novel methods algorithms system architectures and evaluation frameworks for securing modern intelligent and distributed systems. The project lies at the intersection of cybersecurity AI and distributed systems combining mathematically grounded security mechanisms with practical system design and implementation to address both fundamental scientific questions and real-world challenges.
The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research on the security of AI-enabled distributed systems and the use of AI to secure large-scale networked systems and infrastructures. Potential research directions include but are not limited to:
- Security robustness and privacy of generative and agentic AI systems as well as intelligent network services;
- Trustworthy and explainable AI for critical infrastructures and cyber-physical systems;
- AI-assisted cybersecurity mechanisms;
- Security and privacy of cloud edge and distributed systems;
- Privacy-enhancing technologies;
- Secure protocols and cryptographic mechanisms for intelligent and distributed systems;
- Security analytics based on graph learning and large-scale data analysis.
The research will involve both theoretical investigations and experimental system development. Depending on the specific research direction the project may include mathematical modelling and formal security analysis machine learning and data analytics large-scale simulations prototype implementation and empirical evaluation in realistic environments. Particular emphasis will be placed on research that integrates rigorous security analysis and mathematical foundations with the design implementation and evaluation of secure trustworthy and intelligent distributed systems.

In order to be admitted to postgraduate education the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
Specific entry requirements are described inthe general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Computer and Systems Sciences and state that the applicant must have completed courses at second-cycle level in Computer and Systems Sciences with a minimum of 60 higher education credits or equivalent. The applicant must also have completed a degree project (thesis) of at least 15 higher education addition the applicant is required to have English language skills equivalent of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level B2.
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:
- Independence in the analysis and organization of the earlier scientific work
- Problem formulation and rigor in previous scientific work and in the research plan
- Previously shown ability to keep the specified time limits
- Methodological and scientific maturity
- Communication and cooperation skills
- Subject specific knowledge relevant to education.
The following qualifications will be considered meritorious:
- A strong background and solid knowledge in both theoretical and applied security
- Strong analytical and mathematical abilities
- A solid background in computer science particularly in areas such as computer networks distributed systems artificial intelligence and cybersecurity
- The ability to design analyze and evaluate security mechanisms both theoretically and experimentally
- A demonstrated interest in combining theoretical foundations with practical system implementation.
Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University.
We offer a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education but the employment may include work with education research and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20 %).
A new employment as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year the employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
