The mission of the installation engineering team is to develop installation process and tools to achieve the industrys safest most efficient and most economical installation of onshore wind turbines.The Lead Installation Engineer will be responsible for the technical development of installation capabilities and tools from start to finish: Starting with defining the problem and empathy gathering through design development and finally to an on-site field validation resulting in a completed tool package that can be handed off to regional installation teams. The installation engineering team develops tooling for all turbine subsystems and therefore covers many different technologies: Scope may include major component lifting equipment which can apply to machine heads hubs and other major components and/or drivetrain-related capabilities such as geared turning drives alignment equipment and lifting/rigging
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
- Manage tooling development projects through the NPI process from concept through industrialization by executing design prototyping development validation and final documentation of Installation tooling processes. Tools may include lift beams site fixtures and other specialized tooling and the associated processes required for installation of wind turbine.
- Lead a cross-functional core team to define requirements develop concepts and create technical specifications to guide the mechanical design of tooling and processes.
- Engage with and manage suppliers to finalize design and manufacture the proposed technology.
- Utilize the design process to generate concepts that optimize the end user experience.
- Utilize systems thinking to understand the operations required to complete an installation. During the tool design incorporate end user feedback and detail the operational steps required to use the tooling. Assess for safety and ergonomic considerations.
- Conduct design reviews FMEAs review structural assessments and other critical technical deliverables with chief and principal engineers to ensure all tools and/or methods created by the installation engineering team meet or exceed the safety standards of both GE and Industry
- Create design packages and hand off to regional installation and Global Tech Operations team to enable them to be self-proficient with the newly created tools processes and/or methods
- Support on-site validations for each project and assist with training of the on-site installation leaders and technicians for newly created tools processes and/or methods
Qualifications/Requirements & Eligibility Requirements
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline from an accredited College or University (Mechanical Engineering is a plus)
- Minimum of 4 years of combined experience in engineering.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience applying technical knowledge in practical real-world environments.
- Mechanical Domain Expertise Preferred expertise: lifting and rigging or hydraulics and gearing
- Ability and willingness to travel globally up to 15% of the time when required
- Proven record of being team-oriented proactive and motivated.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to intact with both senior management and hour technicians.
- Familiarity with CAD and Finite Element Analysis

- Ability to work with heavy components cranes and rigging when required in a hands-on environment.
