Design Engineer | Hydrogen Technology
Job Summary
Design the mechanical components that will take our SOEC technology from the lab to industry.
About us
At Kerionics we work to drive a real change in the world: accelerating industrial decarbonization through technologies that make cleaner more efficient energy possible.
As a spin-off from ITQ (UPV-CSIC) we were born from scientific knowledge but our objective is clear: to transform research into real industrial solutions. Our SOEC technology thanks to its high energy efficiency allows us to produce hydrogen where its needed most: in energy-intensive industries such as steel petrochemicals cement ceramics glass and paper.
We want to prove that an ambitious energy transition is not only possible but already underway and you can be part of it.
Who we are
We are a multicultural team of more than 35 people united by a shared purpose: building a more sustainable future through technological innovation.
Scientists engineers and business professionals passionate about turning scientific knowledge into real technology that solves the challenges of the industries that most need to decarbonize.
What you will do
Your mission will be to design develop validate and industrialize the mechanical components of our SOEC/SOFC stacks (interconnects compression systems structural parts) ensuring they are robust manufacturable and reliable so we can scale a validated production-ready electrolysis stack.
Mechanical design
You will design the stacks mechanical components (interconnect plates end plates manifolds etc.) including CAD modelling and tolerance analysis.
You will translate CFD insights (developed jointly with the specialist) into concrete design decisions.
You will keep at least one design iteration moving per week (CAD update drawing revision or design review) for components under active development.
Analysis and simulation
You will run mechanical and thermomechanical simulations of the stack feeding results into design decisions within the same week.
You will work closely with the teams CFD specialist.
Validation and manufacturing
You will validate the design through prototype assemblies DFMEA and coordination with the testing team; this is where youll spend most of your time.
You will directly supervise assembly whenever a new stack design is built for the first time making sure the build matches specifications.
You will coordinate with suppliers on manufacturing processes (stamping laser welding sealing) and their technical follow-up flagging any risk of delay at least two weeks in advance.
Collaboration and documentation
You will provide technical input during post-mortem analysis of stack failures or test-bench issues helping interpret root causes.
You will coordinate with European project partners on anything that affects the design.
You will document technical specifications and prepare the corresponding reports.
How we work
You will work on-site at our facilities in Parque Tecnológico de Paterna (Valencia) close to the product: lab workshop prototypes and test benches.
There are no fully defined processes here and no single right way of doing things: you will work in an R&D environment where the design evolves alongside what we learn with each iteration. Were looking for someone comfortable in that context (analytical resourceful motivated by seeing their design become a real component) who gains autonomy progressively as they get to know the product and the team.
We start early at 7:30 am which lets us enjoy our afternoons for sports family or whatever you prefer.
What we ask for
Must-haves
Degree in Mechanical Industrial Aerospace or related Engineering.
At least 2 years of experience in mechanical design of metal components (CAD surfaces in SolidWorks).
Solid understanding of thermomechanical design (thermal expansion stress analysis tolerance stack-up).
Experience with sheet-metal manufacturing processes (stamping welding) and direct supplier coordination.
Familiarity with GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
Ability to communicate professionally in Spanish or English.
Valid work permit for Spain. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship for this position.
Residence in Valencia or availability to relocate within 8 weeks.
Were looking for someone who...
Thinks across mechanical thermal and materials considerations without locking into a single discipline.
Is resourceful and meticulous about tolerances and manufacturability.
Can communicate clearly with suppliers and international partners.
Adapts well to a scale-up environment where priorities shift.
Is building their career as a design engineer and wants a role to grow into with progressive responsibility not a senior-level fit from day one.
Not required but youll surprise us if you also...
Have experience with high-temperature systems (SOEC/SOFC fuel cells electrolysers or similar energy technologies).
Are familiar with simulation tools such as PrePoMax or OpenFOAM.
Have worked with ceramic materials or fragile components.
Know DFMEA methodology or design-for-automation principles.
Have experience in a startup or scale-up.
What we offer
25-30K depending on experience and fit.
Permanent contract.
Working hours from 7:30 to around 16:00 giving you your afternoons free.
22 working days of holiday plus the Christmas period.
Cross-learning sessions with people from different areas.
Annual training budget tailored to your needs.
Language lessons.
Enrichment through the cultural diversity of our team: youll work alongside people from India the UK Poland France Pakistan Mexico Argentina Colombia and more.
Every Friday from 11:00 to 12:00 a proper Valencian esmorzaret to disconnect and get to know each other outside of work.
Being part of a purpose-driven startup where learning and sustainability go hand in hand.
Contributing directly to industrial decarbonization through SOEC technology.
How the selection process will look
A video call with our People & Culture team to expand on your application and answer any questions.
An in-person meeting with your future manager Nicolás Hernández to talk through the technical side of the role.
If everything fits youll receive an offer. We aim to keep this under 3 to 4 weeks from first contact.
At Kerionics we firmly believe in equal opportunities. All candidates will be considered regardless of gender age origin sexual orientation gender identity religion or any other personal characteristic.
If you have a disability and need any adjustment during the selection process write to us confidentially at .
And last but not least about our culture...
We make everything possible. Its the spirit that drives our resilience fuels our innovation and pushes us to keep overcoming challenges.
We speak up. Radical honesty is how we make ideas stronger and build trust.
We get curious. Whether its cracking a membrane problem or rethinking how we run a morning meeting we explore test and iterate.
Weve got each others backs. We share knowledge celebrate wins big and small and help when someones stuck.
We value every background. Diversity isnt just talk its how we innovate better.
We own it. Were proactive; we dont wait around. This is our project and every one of us pushes it forward.
We learn from our mistakes. Were not afraid to try fail and try again. Thats how we turn bold ideas into real breakthroughs.
We care. About safety about impact about the people next to us in the blue polo.
