The role

Applications are invitedatSenior LecturerReader orProfessorlevel inAI &Quantum. The role will be basedintheappropriate school withinSAgEfaculty depending on the background and alignment of the candidate: either the School of Computing or theSchool of Mathematics Statistics & Physics(MSP) with a flexible start date to be agreed.

You will beexpected to carry out excellent research and teachingin an area of AI &Quantumwhich complements and strengthens existing activities within research will address the interface between AI (including research intoand/or the application ofartificial intelligence machinelearningor data science) and Quantum (including theoretical or experimental research into quantumtechnologies orunderpinning experimental techniques or theoretical foundations).You will contribute to the research profile of the assigned school bypublishingininternationallyrecognisedjournalsand conferencesdemonstratingresearch impact and securing external research funding. Additionally you will be a key contributor to the AI2030 faculty project to broaden our institutional offering in ArtificialIntelligence alongside the related Data Science 2030 project. This willcomprisea joined up educational offering at UG and PGT level and will be sector-leading in providing forward-facing AI skills embedded in academic units across all parts of the university. AI2030 will act as a solid platform to build tangible cross-institutional research and business engagement role holder will have access tostate-of-the-artresearchfacilitieswhich includessignificant investment in the Great Northeast Cleanroom and the recently commissioned supercomputer 2030 will be supported byfurtherstrategic investmentand the role holder will be a critical contributor to the success of the project.

Key Accountabilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide academic leadershipinAI &Quantum shaping research direction and contributing to the strategic development of theappropriateschool(either MSP or Computing)

  • Lead and contribute tointerdisciplinaryresearch initiatives acrossAI &Quantumand refereed articles invenuesof international standingappropriate toAI &Quantum

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the home section and beyond into other disciplines within the universityonAI &Quantum

  • Seek out external funding opportunities and develop grant-funded research projects

  • Attract superviseandmentor doctoral researchers andpostdoctoralassociatesacross a broad range ofAIdisciplines

  • Build andmaintainstrategic links with industrygovernmentand external stakeholdersinapplied methodologicalor theoreticalaspectsofAI& Quantumtechnologies

  • Lead the design and delivery of research-inspired teaching

  • Deliver high-quality teaching assessment and student support at undergraduate and postgraduate levelsin the area ofAI and beyondin accordance withthe requirements of the home School

  • Contribute to programme development accreditation and academic leadership in education across a broad range of AI disciplines as well as specifically withinAI & Quantum

  • Fully engage with Newcastles Leading Edge Curriculum redevelopment ensuring that our students learning is enriched through engagement with research industrypracticeand society

  • Carry out administrative duties as assigned by the Head of School and the School Executive Board

The Person

KnowledgeSkillsand Experience

Essential criteria -Senior Lecturer (Grade H)

  • Ability to deliver high-quality research-led teaching inAI & Quantum usingappropriate technologiesto engage and support students including supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

  • Experience ofleadingprogramme-level design and delivery of teachinglearningand assessment strategies.

  • A strong sustained international research profile with a consistenttrack recordof high-quality outputs and recognition.

  • A record of successful research income generation either in own name or as a major contributor with evidence of leading collaborative research success inAI & Quantum

  • A strongtrack recordof successful supervision of PhD students and postdoctoralresearchersstudents alongside consistent supervision of UG/PG research projects.

  • Demonstrated ability tomentor junior colleaguesleadteamsinitiativesor strategic areas within theSchool contributing to its wider academic and operational leadership.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and contribute to team-based activity with emerging engagement with external stakeholders to support research impact.

  • Strong communicationorganisationaland time management skills with the ability to contribute positively to School prioritiesstrategyand academic community.

AdditionalCriteria Reader

  • An outstanding research profilecommensuratewith career stagewitha strong publication recordinAI &Quantumevidencedby publications in leading venues and other esteem indicatorsappropriate to the subject.

  • Strongability toeffectivelyteach at university level includingexperience ofprogrammedevelopment. Evidence of developmentofandability to deliverinnovative and effective teaching and learning materialsacross a broad range ofMathematical or Computing Science and AImoduleswith an ability to create ideas for course development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to engage effectively across the academic unitFacultyand external stakeholders.

  • Ability topro-activelylead on ambitious academic initiativessuch asAI2030that can contribute to our institutional portfolio inAI for example large-scale funding opportunities and/or new education provision.

  • Experience ofuniversityleadershipor significant administrative rolesand management in academic or industrial settings with the ability to motivate empower and support colleaguesin a collaborative and consultative environment.

  • Strategic thinking with experience of contributing toorganisationaldevelopment and change.

  • Significant experienceof managing projects and leading a group ofresearchers(Desirable)

  • Evidence of supporting cross-disciplinary research(Desirable).

Additional Criteria Professor

  • An internationally recognised research leader with a substantial record of publications in leading journalsand conference proceedings significant research funding and demonstrable impact.

  • A proven ability to lead large-scale collaborative research programmes or institutional initiatives.

  • A sustained record of academic leadership including contributions to School Faculty or national-level strategy.

Qualifications

Senior Lecturer Grade H Reader and Professor

  • A degree (or equivalent)inAI & Quantum or a closely related discipline such as Physics Computing or Mathematics/Statistics.

  • Completed PhDinAI & Quantum or a closely related discipline such as Physics Computing or Mathematics/Statistics.

  • HEteachingqualification (or equivalent experience)

  • A relevant Professional Body Membership asappropriate tothe subject area (Desirable)
