Job Summary
The Energy and Sustainability Engineer is responsible for driving energy efficiency and environmental sustainability across the organisations operations.
The role encompasses conducting energy audits developing and monitoring improvement plans and ensuring regulatory compliance. The incumbent evaluates project feasibility leverages innovative technologies manages stakeholder engagement and provides technical guidance and training all with the objective of reducing the organisations environmental impact and delivering long-term operational cost savings.
- Provide specialist engineering support to operators on plant equipment and systems to enhance sustainability performance.
- Conduct and evaluate the engineering design of plant and systems to ensure alignment with sustainability objectives and best practices.
- Support SCADA-related requirements in collaboration with the Industrial Control Manager.
- Lead and support the full lifecycle of sustainability initiatives from investigation and motivation through to budgeting execution and post-implementation evaluation.
- Identify and implement continuous improvements in energy efficiency and operational effectiveness across all relevant systems.
- Evaluate the feasibility of renewable energy and other emerging technologies for implementation across facilities.
- Identify and assess environmental operational and compliance risks associated with energy and sustainability programmes.
- Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risk factors and ensure regulatory compliance at all times.
- Plan organise and manage sustainability and energy projects from conception through to completion.
- Ensure projects are delivered within approved timeframes and budgetary constraints with clear reporting on progress and outcomes.
- Manage resource allocation and utilisation to maximise project efficiency and value.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders including service providers regulatory bodies and facility management teams.
- Deliver regular reporting on energy consumption sustainability metrics and project performance to relevant stakeholders.
- Provide training and technical guidance to staff to embed a culture of sustainability across the organisation.
- Minimum 7 years experience Maintenance and projects in a hospital or healthcare facility.
- Certified Energy Auditor or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated end-to-end project management experience.
- Engineering proficiency in mechanical electrical or chemical systems relevant to healthcare facilities.
- Proven track record in environmental sustainability assessments and energy consumption reduction methodologies.
- Demonstrated experience with renewable energy plants and systems (solar PV co-generation HVAC optimisation etc.).
- Strong knowledge of risk management principles and control frameworks.
- Financial planning budgeting and cost-benefit analysis for capital and operational projects.
- Systems implementation experience including integration of energy monitoring and management platforms.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office; SAP PM experience advantageous.
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering Mechanical/Electrical or Chemical or equivalent qualification
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) designation or recognised equivalent (required or actively pursuing)
- Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) or equivalent qualification (required or actively pursuing)
- Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer () or Professional Engineering Technologist () is advantageous
- Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g. the Association of Energy Engineers AEE) will be an advantage
