Job Summary

This role is responsible for leading the architecture design and development of low-level connectivity firmware for HP printer platforms with a focus on Wi-Fi Bluetooth Ethernet and NFC subsystems.

As a subject matter expert the engineer drives end-to-end connectivity solutions working across hardware interfaces firmware and networking layers to ensure robust secure and high-performance device connectivity in complex real-world environments.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design architecture and implementation of low-level firmware and drivers that interface with connectivity chipsets (Wi-Fi Bluetooth NFC).

- Own and drive integration of connectivity subsystems using hardware interfaces such as:

  • SDIO USB UART I2C SPI

- Architect and optimize firmware components responsible for:

  • Wireless module bring-up initialization and configuration
  • Power management and system-level coordination with platform firmware

Provide deep technical leadership in integration of third-party connectivity modules including vendor driver stacks and SDKs.

System & Cross-Layer Ownership

- Lead debugging and root cause analysis across the full networking stack:

  • Physical layer through application-layer protocols

- Drive resolution of complex cross-layer issues involving:

  • Wi-Fi Bluetooth Ethernet and IP networking interactions
  • Client device interoperability and router ecosystem behavior

- Analyze and troubleshoot packet flows including:

  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi framing
  • MAC layer behavior and MAC address handling
  • IPv4/IPv6 addressing routing and packet delivery
  • Multicast and unicast communication behavior

Protocols & Security Leadership

- Provide subject matter expertise in:

  • IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) Bluetooth (BLE) Wi-Fi Direct (P2P) Wi-Fi Aware (NAN)

- Lead implementation and integration of security protocols including:

  • WPA3 802.1X (EAP) TLS/SSL

- Drive compliance and interoperability across standards bodies (e.g. Wi-Fi Alliance Bluetooth SIG)

Diagnostics Reliability and Field Excellence

- Define and drive advanced logging telemetry and diagnostics strategies to enable efficient field issue triage and root cause analysis.

- Lead investigations of customer-reported connectivity issues including:

  • Reproduction root cause analysis and resolution across firmware and network layers

- Establish best practices for connectivity reliability self-healing and performance optimization

Technical Leadership & Influence

- Act as the connectivity firmware domain expert across programs and organizations

- Lead or significantly influence architecture decisions for new platforms and connectivity features

- Drive alignment with cross-functional teams:

  • SoC vendors module vendors platform firmware teams OS/client teams

- Mentor engineers and elevate team capability in connectivity firmware development

- Contribute to long-term strategy and innovation in printer connectivity

Education & Experience

- Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering Computer Engineering Computer Science or related discipline

- Typically 710 years of experience in embedded firmware development with deep expertise in connectivity and networking

- Proven experience leading technically complex firmware projects involving hardware-software integration

- Proven ability to lead remote collaboration and drive cross-geographical teamwork across across different time zones including U.S. Pacific Time and India

- Flexibility to support work across global time zones and travel occasionally as required.

Knowledge & Skills (Expert-Level Connectivity Focus)

Embedded & Low-Level Firmware

- Expert-level proficiency in C/C for embedded systems

- Strong experience with RTOS and/or embedded Linux platforms

- Deep understanding of firmware architecture driver development and hardware abstraction layers

Wireless & Networking Protocols

- Deep expertise in:

  • EEE 802.11 (including MAC layer behavior)
  • Bluetooth (Classic and BLE)
  • Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Aware

- Strong understanding of:

  • TCP/IP stack (IPv4/IPv6)
  • DHCP DNS mDNS and service discovery mechanisms

Networking Fundamentals

- Strong-level understanding of:

  • OSI model (Layers 17)
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi frame structures
  • MAC layer behavior and MAC address usage
  • IP addressing subnetting routing and packet delivery
  • Multicast vs unicast communication dynamics

Hardware Interface Protocols

- Strong experience with:

  • SDIO (WLAN/BT combo modules) UART USB I2C SPI

- Deep understanding of:

  • Interrupt handling DMA concurrency and performance optimization

- Experience debugging hardware/firmware interactions using low-level tools (logic analyzers bus analyzers)

Security & Authentication

- Good understanding of:

  • WPA2/WPA3
  • 802.1X (EAP methods)
  • TLS/SSL and certificate-based authentication
  • Secure Boot fundamentals

Debugging & System Analysis

- Advanced proficiency with:

  • Packet capture tools (e.g. Wireshark)
  • Firmware logging tracing and crash analysis

- Strong ability to debug cross-layer issues spanning hardware firmware and network protocols
