Job Summary

The Assistant Accountant will be based in Kigali and will play a critical role in keeping AMIs financial engine running accurately efficiently and compliantly. This is a role for someone who takes genuine pride in getting the numbers right someone who is organized detail-oriented and understands that strong financial foundations are what enable AMI to deliver impact at scale across the continent.

The successful candidate will report to the Finance Controller in Rwanda and to AMIs Senior Accountant based in Kenya and will liaise with staff across other country offices including Senegal and South Africa.

Accounting functions and internal controls

Account receivables

  • Ensure that inter-company billing is in line with procedures (e.g. mark-up charge out rate VAT treatment) and is properly recorded.

  • Ensure customer invoices (external and internal) are accurate and raised on time

  • Invoices are filed sequentially on the google drive folder per month

Account payables

  • Updating the Expense tracker based on approved POs and Expense reports

  • Ensure that supplier invoices are properly authorized posted and coded to the relevant account code and recorded in the accounting system weekly

  • Reconciling the A/P monthly to the supplier statement/invoice - For all major suppliers

  • Reconcile the AP Listing to the TB monthly

  • Updating payments on AP before the next payment run

  • Preparing payment run before 14th 23rd and 30th.


Cash and Bank

  • Ensure that cash is safe-guarded and payments properly accounted for

  • Ensure that bank accounts and mobile money balances are posted at least weekly

  • Weekly posting of direct debits and credits from bank statements

  • Monthly reconciliation for all accounts Bank accounts and Petty cash

  • Reconciliations and bank statements are saved on Google Drive

  • Ensure that cash is safe-guarded and payments properly accounted for

  • Ensure that bank payments are properly authorized

  • Ensure that bank deposits and receipts are properly accounted for and with sufficient supporting documentation.

Financial processing and internal control

  • Ensure that accounting records are accurate and up to date and that required monthly processing deadlines are met

  • Preparation of monthly Country reports by 12th of every month

  • Understand and follow group accounting procedures (per finance manual) and ensure that others do the same

  • Assist the Financial Controller and Accountant as required

Grants

  • Support grants and donor compliance by ensuring financial transactions adhere to donor rules and reporting requirements and tracking expenditure against approved budgets.

  • Collaborate with the programs team and other departments to align financial records with work plans and support donor reporting.

Tax Compliance and governance

  • Comply with local VAT income tax WHT and statutory reporting requirements (liaising with tax and other advisers as necessary)

  • Prepare a monthly reconciliation of Sales as per VAT to sales as per Ledger.

  • Liaise with company auditors as necessary to ensure a smooth annual audit process.


Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or a related field

  • Minimum 4 years of hands-on experience in an accounting or bookkeeping role preferably within a structured finance team

  • Professional accounting certification (CPA ACCA or equivalent) completed or in progress is a strong advantage

  • Experience in grant financial management and donor compliance is highly desirable

  • Prior experience working in a multi-country NGO or development sector environment is an added advantage

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in at least one recognised accounting software package (e.g. QuickBooks Sage Xero or similar)

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Google Workspace tools

  • Solid understanding of Rwandas tax and statutory compliance requirements VAT WHT income tax or a demonstrable ability to get up to speed quickly

  • Familiarity with accounts payable and receivable processes bank reconciliations and month-end reporting

Required Skills:

Bachelors degree in Business Marketing or a related field Minimum of 4 years experience in business development strategic partnerships or B2B/enterprise sales Proven experience operating in fast-paced high-growth or entrepreneurial environments Demonstrated experience in B2B business development with a strong track record of driving revenue growth Proven ability to engage influence and sell to senior stakeholders including CEOs and executive leadership teams Track record of successfully closing mid- to high-value deals (USD 7800) Strong client relationship management experience with the ability to build and sustain long-term partnerships High level of commercial acumen including pipeline management opportunity prioritization and deal structuring Excellent communication presentation and negotiation skills Strong ownership mindset with the ability to operate independently and drive results Strategic thinker with a passion for driving business growth and impact across Africa
