Job Summary
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Establish maintain and improve the Quality Management System (QMS)
- Ensure compliance with standards such as:
- ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 / AS9100 (as applicable)
- Lead internal and external audits
- Control documentation (SOPs WI specifications)
- Define and enforce optical quality criteria
- Surface quality (scratch pits stains etc.)
- Parametric (Power/IRR center thickness outside diameter ETV etc.)
- Approve inspection methods and acceptance standards
- Ensure all outgoing products meet customer optical specifications
- Oversee use and validation of:
- Interferometers
- Test glass
- ETV measurement
- Ensure proper calibration and measurement system analysis (MSA/GR&R)
- Drive accuracy and repeatability of measurements
- Monitor key metrics:
- Yield
- Scrap/rework rates
- Cp/Cpk
- Lead Statistical Process Control (SPC) implementation
- Partner with production to improve process capability
- Lead investigations on:
- Customer complaints
- Internal defects
- Use structured methods:
- 8D Fishbone 5 Whys
- Implement and verify corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
- Qualify and audit suppliers of:
- Raw Materials (ZnSe Silicon blanks)
- Consumables (diamond slurry polishing pad red soap coolant etc.)
- Coatings and components
- glass and aluminum tooling
- Ensure incoming materials meet specs
- Drive supplier quality improvement
- Lead and develop:
- Quality Engineers
- Inspectors/Technicians
- Build a quality mindset across production
- Train teams on:
- Standards
- Defect awareness
- Measurement techniques
- Act as primary contact for:
- Customer audits
- Quality issues
- Technical clarifications
- Communicate quality performance and improvements
- Support new product introduction (NPI)
- Drive Lean / Six Sigma initiatives
- Identify systemic improvement opportunities
- Align quality objectives with business goals
Education & Experience
- Preferred Degrees:
- Optics / Optical Engineering (best fit)
- Physics (Applied / Optics-related)
- Materials Science / Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering (with precision manufacturing exposure
The candidate must come from environments with tight tolerances and precision manufacturing.
- Preferred Industry Backgrounds
- Optical fabrication (lenses prisms mirrors)
- Photonics / laser optics
- Semiconductor manufacturing
- Precision machining / ultra-precision polishing
- Aerospace or medical device manufacturing (high-spec components)
Skills
- Leadership- Able to quickly earn the respect and loyalty of subordinates; promotes harmony and teamwork.
- Problem solving. Able to find and remove roots cause for individual and complex quality problems.
- Ability to lead cross functional teams in problem solving activities.
- Experience in SPC Six Sigma Lean CQE preferred.
- Experience in data collection and analysis including process capability studies and analysis of DOE data.
- Auditing knowledge including ISO 9001. CQA preferred.
- Calibration and verification expertise.
