The Role

TheScience Communications Leaddrives REV Oceans science communications translating complex ocean science into clearengagingand credible content for media partners policymakersfundersand the public.
Working closely with REV Oceans Science and Communications teams the roleidentifiesand develops compelling stories from scientific missionsresearchand partnerships across editorial digital media and public engagement channels.


Reporting to theCommunications Director the role sets the science communications strategy editorialdirectionand priorities. It serves as the specialist communications interface for REV Oceans science program ensuring that what happens in the laboratories at sea and across the science program reaches and resonates with the people who need to hear it.


This is a hands-on position combining deep scientific understanding with excellent writing storytelling and multimedia communication skills.


This is ahybrid role combining remote work with regular collaboration at REV Oceans HQ inFornebu Norway. International travel andsignificant timeonboard REV during selected science missions will be.

Key relationships

The role works closely with REV OceansScience and Science Operations teams vessel crew Mission Teams Onboard Media Coordinator external scientists and research partners and communications and creative agencies.



Working within agreed scientific priorities the Science Communications Lead develops the communications strategy briefs and editorial direction for science missions. The role provides briefs and editorial direction to the Onboard Media Coordinator who supports execution at sea through content capture production coordination media studio operations and asset management.


Key responsibilities

  • Develop REV Oceans science communications plan in line with organisational impact and communications priorities
  • Set editorial priorities communications themes and storytelling approaches across the science program
  • Identify compelling stories findings and people across missions research and partnerships
  • Develop communications plans for missions publications milestones and announcements
  • Ensure science communications are accurate accessible engaging and consistent with REV Oceans voice and mission
  • Translate complex research into compelling stories for non-specialist audiences across written digital and multimedia formats
  • Write and develop articles interviews web content reports presentations and other materials
  • Develop science content for digital and social channels with the wider Communications team
  • Interview scientists and support them in communicating their work effectively to diverse audiences
  • Develop concepts and briefs for photography video animation infographics and other visual storytelling formats
  • Work with agencies and creative specialists to deliver high-quality content
  • Work with Science and Science Operations teams to identify communications opportunities around upcoming missions
  • Develop mission communications briefs storylines and content requirements ahead of each deployment
  • Brief and provide editorial direction to the Onboard Media Coordinator for content capture and production
  • Join selected science missions where additional communications support is required
  • Coordinate communications around significant findings publications and mission milestones
  • Support scientists and partners with media engagement presentations events and public engagement activities
  • Build relationships across the ocean science community to strengthen REV Oceans reach and impact


Qualifications and experience

  • Strong scientific understanding combined with exceptional communication and storytelling skills
  • A background in science science communication journalism or a related field
  • Strong understanding of scientific research methods and complex scientific topics
  • Excellent English is required. Portuguese and/or Spanish language skills are an advantage as is an interest in developing communications for multilingual and international audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex science for non-specialist audiences
  • Experience across editorial digital and multimedia content
  • Strong interviewing presentation and public speaking skills
  • Experience working effectively with scientists researchers and creative specialists


We particularly welcomescientists who have moved into communications or journalism as well asexperienced science journalists or communicators. Experience in ocean science marine researchclimateor conservation is an advantage.
