Project Geologist

About the Role

The Project Geologist coordinates and delivers site-based exploration and mining geology activities. The role provides geological support to exploration mining and metallurgy through geological mapping drilling supervision sampling data management interpretation modelling and technical reporting.

The successful candidate will be field-ready and able to combine exploration geology with mining geoscience. They will work effectively with internal technical and operational teams external consultants and contractors artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) community leaders local government representatives and other stakeholders. Principal Accountabilities:

• Provide geological support to exploration mining and metallurgical activities including interpretation of drilling mapping and assay data to improve understanding of geological controls on mineralisation ore and waste.
  
• Ensure drilling sampling and assay programmes generate fit-for-purpose data for three-dimensional geological modelling and grade-control modelling.
  
• Maintain geological data quality and validity through database controls validation procedures and routine quality control and quality assurance studies.
  
• Participate in ore-loss and dilution-control studies pit reconciliation month-end reporting and other operational performance reviews.
  
• Act as Senior Mine Geologist when required and provide appropriate technical leadership at assigned project sites.
  
• Serve as the principal site representative for geology supervising consultants and contractors and submitting daily sampling statistics daily summaries weekly reports and monthly reports.
  
• Contribute geological input to technical reports project evaluations and other business or operational reports.
  

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct desktop studies field geological surveys and reconnaissance investigations to support geological mapping geochemical and geophysical surveys exploration databases trenching and drilling plans and due diligence of prospective sites.
  
• Support exploration planning and mining geoscience programmes across multiple projects.
  
• Coordinate and supervise reverse-circulation (RC) and diamond drilling including contractor coordination drilling plans site supervision borehole management core-shed activities borehole photography geological logging density measurements sampling and results interpretation.
  
• Ensure geological mapping and logging information is accurately captured and maintained in the relevant GIS and geological databases.
  
• Collect collate manage validate and interpret remote-sensing topographical geological geochemical geophysical pitting trenching drilling and other geoscientific datasets using appropriate technical software.
  
• Analyse geological and assay data to improve understanding of grade distributions and controls on mineralisation.
  
• Ensure grade-control estimates and ore-perimeter designs incorporate relevant assay pit-mapping and drill-hole logging data.
  
• Prepare technical geological reports geological maps sections geochemical plans three-dimensional geological models and technical presentations.
  
• Support mineral-resource studies resource and reserve estimation and project due diligence evaluations.
  
• Work closely with technical operational and project teams to support safe and effective project delivery.
  
• Engage professionally with consultants contractors ASM local communities government representatives and other relevant stakeholders.
  
• Monitor production rates and material quality contribute to sustainable extraction approaches and consider the environmental impacts of mining.
  
• Ensure all field activities comply with approved health safety and environmental requirements.
  
• Assist the Mine Surveyor when required and provide limited cover for routine surveying tasks during scheduled absences.
  

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience

• Bachelors degree in Geology Applied Geology Geoscience or a colosely related discipline.
  
• Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience in exploration geology mining geology or a related field.
  
• Demonstrable experience in specialist mineral exploration or mining projects.
  
• Experience working in field-based environments.
  

Technical Skills and Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of geological mapping structural geology geophysics and geochemistry.
  
• Understanding of exploration and mining geoscience practices geostatistics resource and reserve models and grade-control models.
  
• Experience coordinating or supervising drilling programmes and managing geological field activities.
  
• Ability to conduct geological research technical studies data analysis and technical assessments.
  
• Ability to interpret geological geochemical and geophysical data and translate findings into practical recommendations.
  
• Working knowledge of at least one GIS or two-dimensional (2D) mapping platform such as ArcGIS Pro ArcGIS QGIS or MapInfo.
  
• Working knowledge of at least one three-dimensional geological modelling platform such as Leapfrog Geo Datamine Surpac Micromine or Maptek Vulcan.
  
• Experience with geological database administration data validation and quality control.
  
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office particularly Word Excel and PowerPoint together with effective email communication.
  
• Good English proficiency both written and verbal.

• Additional professional certification or training relevant to mining exploration GIS or geoscience.
  
• Experience working on projects in Nigeria or similar operating environments.
  
• Valid drivers licence where applicable.
  
• Practical experience with hand-held GPS DGPS handheld-XRF scanner portable LIBS scanner magnetometers magnetic susceptibility meter Scintillometer / Radiation Detector hardness pencil magnetic pencil etc.
  
• Experience using a petrographic microscope and conducting field mapping.
