The Medical Laboratory Scientist runs the laboratory that referring clinicians depend on to diagnose and treat their patients. You will process tests across chemistry haematology microbiology immunology and toxicology own the quality control that keeps results trustworthy and supervise the Laboratory Technician. Much of the work happens behind the scenes but the accuracy of what leaves your bench determines what happens to the patient next. All laboratory ordering results and reporting run through BeaconOS our own platform which you will be trained on during onboarding.

Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Center Manager the Medical Laboratory Scientists responsibilities include:

Specimen handling and processing

• Take responsibility for the collection and receipt of patient specimens for laboratory processing

• Match orders to specimen labelling sort and log specimens and check labelling for accuracy

• Prepare samples for testing using appropriate laboratory equipment

• Keep work surfaces clean and orderly and arrange reports for timely delivery

Diagnostic testing

• Perform tests across chemistry haematology urinalysis coagulation immunology microbiology and toxicology

• Carry out technical procedures to identify bacteria parasites fungi and mycobacteria and determine susceptibility

• Identify abnormal blood cells and perform cultures as required

• Complete blood typing antibody screening and compatibility testing where blood products are handled

Result validity and reporting

• Assess the validity of results obtained and confirm the testing method followed established quality control procedure

• Record results accurately and confidentially in BeaconOS

• Identify and communicate abnormal patient conditions by alerting the Center Manager the pathologist or the referring clinician

• Report mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials

Quality control and equipment

• Maintain quality by running standards and controls and monitoring quality control measures

• Verify equipment function through routine maintenance calibration and troubleshooting

• Comply with established safety standards procedures and legal requirements

• Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients visitors and colleagues

Supervision and patient contact

• Supervise the Laboratory Technician in preparing samples and laboratory reports

• Serve as a technical resource by supporting staff training and answering colleagues questions

• Welcome patients warmly during specimen collection and put them at ease

• Maintain patient confidence by keeping all laboratory information confidential

• Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Science

• Current licence to practise from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN)

• Completion of NYSC or valid exemption

• Minimum of 2 years post-licence experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory

• Demonstrated competence across at least two disciplines among chemistry haematology microbiology and immunology

• Rigorous approach to quality control documentation and confidentiality

• Computer literate and comfortable working in a digital record system we train every new hire on BeaconOS our own clinical platform during onboarding

• Experience in a high-volume outpatient or diagnostic centre environment

• Experience supervising laboratory technicians or assistants

• Familiarity with laboratory accreditation and external quality assessment schemes
