Role objective

The Laboratory Technician keeps the laboratory running: receiving and preparing specimens performing routine tests maintaining reagents and equipment and supporting the Medical Laboratory Scientist in producing accurate and reliable data. Careful methodical work at this stage is what makes a reliable result possible further down the line. All laboratory ordering results and reporting run through BeaconOS our own platform which you will be trained on during onboarding.

Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Center Manager and working under the direction of the Medical Laboratory Scientist responsibilities include:

Specimen receipt and preparation

  • Receive and process samples and identify their suitability for testing

  • Prepare samples for testing using appropriate laboratory equipment

  • Assist in mixing buffers required for processing patient specimens

  • Organise and maintain reagents and equipment

  • Coordinate the placing of orders for laboratory inventory supplies

Routine testing

  • Perform laboratory testing including pH measurement and bacterial culturing

  • Follow established methodologies when carrying out routine tasks

  • Label solutions and support the delivery of tests accurately

  • Adhere to correct procedures policies and health and safety guidelines

Data and records

  • Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory records

  • Document all activities record results and enter and retrieve data in BeaconOS

  • Generate reports of testing results and retrieve results for referring clinicians

  • Support the Medical Laboratory Scientist in producing and interpreting reliable data

Laboratory environment

  • Perform maintenance on laboratory equipment and report faults promptly

  • Keep the laboratory clean organised and fit for use at all times

  • Ensure proper disposal of laboratory waste

  • Provide administrative assistance within the laboratory

Patient contact

  • Welcome patients warmly during specimen collection and put them at ease

  • Maintain patient confidence and privacy by keeping laboratory information confidential

  • Handle findings sensitively and never cause a patient unnecessary alarm

Requirements
  • OND HND or equivalent qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or Laboratory Technology

  • Current registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) as a technician

  • Minimum of 1 years experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory

  • Working knowledge of specimen handling laboratory safety and waste disposal

  • Methodical accurate and able to follow established procedure precisely

  • Computer literate and comfortable working in a digital record system we train every new hire on BeaconOS our own clinical platform during onboarding

Preferred
  • Experience in a high-volume outpatient or diagnostic centre environment

  • Familiarity with quality control routines and equipment calibration

  • Experience with inventory and reagent stock management
