Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

The Generator Technician will be responsible for the day-to-day operation preventive maintenance fault diagnosis and repair of diesel standby generator sets (CAT and Perkins platforms) ranging from mid-range to large industrial capacities as part of a layered multi-source power management system (grid generators solar hybrid and UPS). The role requires a technician who can work independently on routine PM tasks while escalating complex faults appropriately and who understands the operational discipline required on a live 24/7 high-footfall facility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance (weekly minor/Type 1 major/Type 2 and extensive/Type 3 servicing) on diesel generator sets in line with OEM (CAT/Perkins) intervals and manufacturer guidelines.

Perform daily/weekly checks: oil and coolant levels battery voltage fuel levels leak inspection exhaust system inspection and auto-start/exercise run tests.

Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical electrical and control system faults on generator sets including AMF/ATS panels and carry out first-line repairs.

Support load bank testing injector calibration governor calibration and coolant system servicing during major and extensive service cycles.

Monitor fuel management systems and support maintenance of minimum reserve levels for continuous standby readiness.

Maintain accurate maintenance logs service records and defect reports using the facilitys CMMS/CAFM platform.

Respond promptly to generator-related emergency call-outs and support incident response for power failure events including out-of-hours where required.

Ensure safe isolation lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and safety interlock procedures are strictly followed at all times no bypassing of safety systems under any circumstance.

Liaise with the Chief Engineer / Lead Engineering staff on parts requisition defect escalation and PPM scheduling.

Support onboarding of new generator units and condition assessments as required.

Maintain a clean safe and organised generator room/plant area at all times.



Requirements

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

OND/HND or Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline (relevant hands-on experience will also be considered).

Minimum 36 years hands-on experience maintaining and repairing diesel standby generators with direct working knowledge of CAT (Caterpillar) and Perkins engine platforms.

Practical experience across generator capacity ranges from 500 kVA up to 1500 kVA (industrial/commercial standby power).

Working knowledge of AMF/ATS control panels load bank testing procedures and basic power management principles.

Manufacturer-recognised technical training/certification (CAT or Perkins) is an advantage.

Comfortable working with a CMMS/CAFM system for logging maintenance activity (training provided if not previously used).

Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills with a methodical safety-first approach to work.

Willingness to work shifts be on standby/on-call and respond to emergency call-outs outside normal hours.

Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a wider engineering team on a live operational site.

Physically fit and able to work in a plant-room/industrial environment (climbing lifting confined spaces where applicable).
