Job Summary
Our client is seeking an experienced and commercially driven Business Development Manager (BDM) to drive sustainable growth across its loan book and deposit base within an assigned territory.
This role combines business development client acquisition relationship management and portfolio management. The ideal candidate will be responsible for originating quality loans mobilising deposits growing customer relationships and ensuring that portfolio performance remains within approved risk limits.
This is not a growth-at-any-cost role. Success in this position means building a profitable and sustainable portfolio while maintaining strong compliance credit discipline and customer relationships.
Who Are We Looking For
You are commercially driven and comfortable originating new business independently.
You have experience in loan origination credit business development or relationship management within a banking or financial services environment.
You understand how to balance loan and deposit growth with portfolio quality and risk management.
You are confident building relationships with individuals SMEs traders business owners and other customers within your assigned market.
You have sound credit judgment and can assess business opportunities without compromising risk or compliance standards.
You are comfortable working in the field and developing opportunities within your assigned territory.
You are highly self-motivated resilient and capable of delivering results with minimal supervision.
You understand the importance of accurate documentation KYC AML and internal compliance requirements.
You are target-driven but recognise that sustainable growth and portfolio quality are equally important.
You have strong integrity and exercise sound ethical judgment in your business decisions.
Your Responsibilities
Loan Book Growth & Disbursement
Identify originate and develop loan opportunities within the assigned target market and approved risk appetite.
Build and maintain a strong pipeline of prospective borrowers to consistently meet monthly disbursement targets.
Conduct preliminary assessments of loan opportunities and customer eligibility.
Ensure loan applications are properly documented and comply with internal credit policies before submission for approval.
Work with relevant teams to support a smooth loan appraisal and approval process.
Drive sustainable loan book growth while maintaining appropriate portfolio quality.
Deposit Mobilisation
Mobilise savings and fixed deposit accounts from individuals businesses groups and other target customer segments.
Develop strategies to grow and retain the deposit base within the assigned territory.
Support deposit growth in line with the organisations Loan-to-Deposit Ratio targets.
Reactivate dormant accounts and identify opportunities to deepen relationships with existing customers.
Encourage existing customers to utilise additional banking products and services where relevant.
Portfolio Quality & Risk Management
Maintain Portfolio-at-Risk (PAR30) within the approved ceiling for your assigned portfolio.
Monitor loan repayments and proactively follow up on early signs of delinquency.
Work closely with customers and relevant internal teams to address repayment challenges before accounts deteriorate.
Support recovery efforts for past-due accounts in collaboration with Credit and Recovery teams.
Escalate accounts that breach approved risk thresholds promptly.
Maintain strong credit discipline and ensure new business growth does not compromise portfolio quality.
Customer Relationship Management & Business Development
Identify and develop new business relationships within your assigned market.
Build relationships with traders SMEs salary earners business owners and other relevant customer segments.
Maintain strong relationships with existing customers to encourage retention repeat business and referrals.
Identify opportunities to grow customer accounts and strengthen wallet share.
Represent the organisation professionally within the community and at relevant market trade and business association engagements.
Provide a positive and professional customer experience throughout the business relationship.
Reporting & Compliance
Track and report performance against monthly loan disbursement deposit mobilisation and portfolio quality targets.
Provide relevant data and insights for Monthly Performance Reviews.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date customer and portfolio records.
Ensure full compliance with KYC AML credit risk and operational policies.
Escalate compliance or portfolio risks promptly to the appropriate teams.
Work closely with Credit Risk Operations and other internal stakeholders to support business objectives.

Growing and retaining a healthy deposit base that supports sustainable lending activities.
Building strong customer relationships that result in repeat business and referrals.
Maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring consistent compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.
Providing accurate and timely performance reports to the Head of Business Development.
Becoming a trusted and reliable representative of the organisation within your assigned market.
To Be Considered for This Role You Should Have
A Bachelors degree or HND in Business Finance Accounting Economics or a related field.
A minimum of 23 years of experience in business development credit or loan origination or relationship management.
Experience within microfinance retail banking or financial services is strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of credit appraisal and basic financial analysis.
Understanding of KYC and AML requirements.
Familiarity with banking operations and credit processes.
Knowledge of CBN microfinance regulations is an advantage.
Strong sales and business development experience.
Experience managing customer relationships and building business pipelines.
Ability to assess business opportunities and exercise sound credit judgment.
Comfort working with targets portfolio metrics and financial performance indicators.
Familiarity with the assigned territory or market is an advantage.
Local language proficiency relevant to the assigned territory is an added advantage.
