Position Overview:

The Senior/Principal Software Engineer leads the design and development of complex software systems and serves as a technical authority within the Navico Group PD&E division. This role involves driving architectural decisions mentoring engineers and ensuring alignment between technical solutions and business objectives. The Senior Engineer is expected to lead by example fostering innovation and quality through best practices code reviews and strategic planning. With deep expertise in system design and implementation this role is pivotal in shaping the technical direction of projects and elevating team performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the design and development of scalable high-performance software systems.
  • Facilitate technical design sessions and conduct in-depth code reviews.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers fostering a culture of technical excellence.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to align solutions with business objectives.
  • Champion software quality through test automation CI/CD and best practices.
  • Influence architectural direction and contribute to long-term technical strategy.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science Software Engineering Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 7 years of software engineering experience including system design and implementation.
  • Expertise in software architecture scalable system design and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages and development frameworks.
  • Strong leadership communication and mentoring skills.
  • Proficient with C and C.
  • Experienced with Make and CMake.
  • Experienced with QT/QML or similar framework.
  • Experienced developing applications for Linux iOS Android and Windows.
  • Experienced with CAN bus.
  • Experience with IoT ie. Thingsboard MQTT Mender and related technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading Agile teams or technical initiatives.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or technical publications.
  • Experience with safety-critical or high-reliability systems.
  • Familiarity with embedded security bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms.
  • Experienced developing Linux kernel drivers.
  • Experienced bringing up new hardware from scratch.
  • Experienced with networking technologies WiFi Bluetooth TCP/IP Ethernet would be a bonus.
  • Familiar with CI and DevOps (Azure Jenkins or similar).
  • Familiar with Docker or similar.
  • Strong ability to read and understand electronic schematics.

Working Conditions:

  • Technical hands-on position.
  • On water testing on advanced prototypes and new products.
  • Will work mainly with the New Zealand team in office but will have occasional need to partner with colleagues abroad.
