Who we are Ko wai mātou

The University of Otago established in 1869 has a long and distinguished tradition of teaching and research. Its Department of Physics was the first to be established in New Zealand and was one of the Universitys foundation disciplines. The Department currently hosts the national Centre of Research Excellence in Photonics and Quantum Technologies the Dodd-Walls Centre as well as Quantum Technologies Aotearoa (QTA) a national multi-institutional research programme. The Department also has particular strengths in affiliated areas through multiple active research groups.

The role Te mahi

In this Postdoctoral Fellow position you will join the research group led by Associate Professor Mikkel F. Andersen to conduct original experimental research individual dysprosium atoms in optical tweezers. The project aims to study how dysprosiums large magnetic interactions can be utilised in future magnetic field sensors and to investigate precursors for novel quantum phases of matter. The project is supported by Quantum Tech. Aotearoa and the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies.

Over the past decades our group has successfully developed a capability to control and manipulate individual atoms using optical tweezers. Recently we have extended this effort by building a new experimental apparatus capable of laser cooling and manipulating dysprosium atoms. The project will utilise this new apparatus.

We are seeking a highly motivated and responsible individual keen to drive the project forward in a methodical and structured manner. You will also assist in the development and mentoring of graduate students. Our group is committed to delivering world-class research published in leading journals and it is a key tenet of our work to provide a supportive and collaborative environment towards this end.

The successful candidate will have:
A PhD in Physics.
Extensive experience with experimental atomic and optical physics including experience with laser cooling.
A solid grounding in quantum optics and lightmatter interaction.
High motivation curiosity and a passion for research.
Experience with programming FPGAs.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) fixed-term position for two years available from 1 December 2026 based in Ōtepoti Dunedin. The start date may be negotiable with the ideal candidate.

The salary for this position is $92350 per annum.
