Were looking for a Data Analyst to join our virtual fencing research and development team. This is a great role for someone whos passionate about data loves to fully understand their domain and thrives on problem solving.

This role is more than a typical data analyst role and extends beyond analysis in many ways. Youll become an expert in virtual fencing understanding the technology inside out and how animals interact with it. Youll extend into data engineering work close to (maybe even in) the backend so were after someone keen to push the boundaries of what a data analyst role can be.

This role will be based at our Auckland HQ and will sometimes require travel to our R&D farm in Morrinsville.

About the role

Youll work as part of a small focused R&D team that is continuously improving the way we virtually fence and shift animals across the globe. Youll spend plenty of time writing queries and crunching the numbers at HQ but youll also be out on the farm observing cows and building your understanding of animal behavior and our product.

Together with our other Data Analyst in the team youll own the guidance data domain. Youll provide insights run trials and proactively identify opportunities for improvement. Youll work with both internal and external partners to enable and support research into the virtual fencing domain.

  • Youre highly curious and thrive on solving hard problems. Youre not afraid to ask questions think outside the box and go beyond the scope of whats been asked to make sure your analysis is comprehensive.

  • You have strong analytical and statistical skills with a good awareness of common statistical traps that can introduce bias. You bring scientific rigour and accuracy to your work and youre able to sniff out inconsistencies in data and follow them through to root causes.

  • Youre comfortable using a variety of tools (e.g. SQL Python R) to query analyse and visualise data and youre keen to extend into data engineering and work close to the backend.

  • Youre a hard worker and a quick learner. Our problems require deep knowledge of cow behaviour and our internal systems. You dont need to start with a background in these areas but youll need a proven ability to learn fast and a genuine hunger to do so.

  • Youre an effective collaborator and a great teammate. Youll work with all sorts of people both internal and external and youll need to adjust your approach and communication depending on the audience.

  • You have a bias for action and are comfortable operating in ambiguity. You break down complex problems using first principles ask the right questions and find a practical way forward.

  • You have strong demonstrated experience in a data analysis role and/or a tertiary degree in statistics or a related field.

  • Curiosity beyond technology and into farming will be a strong motivation for you. Our farmers expect us to know farming as well as they do understand why they do what they do and identify where they can do it better.
