Ultrasound is one of the most widely used medical imaging modalities due to its safety accessibility and real-time capabilities. Yet important limitations remain particularly in abdominal imaging where restricted field-of-view operator dependency and incomplete anatomical coverage often require clinicians to rely on CT or MRI. Our recently funded VICI programme (R)evolution in Abdominal Ultrasound Imaging aims to fundamentally transform ultrasound imaging through distributed multi-aperture sensing advanced image formation and functional imaging methods.
As a postdoctoral researcher you will play a central role in this ambitious programme and act as a technological integrator across multiple research tracks. You will work closely with three PhD candidates focusing on different clinical applications while leading developments in acquisition probe localisation adaptive imaging and image reconstruction. Your research will focus on creating a new generation of ultrasound imaging systems that combine multiple distributed transducers into a coherent imaging platform. You will develop novel methods for multi-aperture ultrasound acquisition ultrasound-based probe localisation and (adaptive) imaging strategies and reconstruction.
The research combines ultrasound physics signal processing machine learning computational imaging and clinical translation. Beyond your individual research contributions you will serve as a technical coach for the PhD researchers helping to align developments across the different work packages and ensuring the successful integration of hardware acquisition methods and image reconstruction frameworks. You will collaborate closely with leading industrial partners including Philips Healthcare

We are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated candidate who has:
- A PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering Electrical Engineering Applied Physics Computer Science Medical Imaging or a related field.
- Strong expertise in ultrasound imaging signal processing computational imaging medical image reconstruction beamforming inverse problems machine learning or related methods.
- Experience with ultrasound acquisition systems (e.g. Verasonics) transducer arrays beamforming and ultrasound physics.
- Excellent programming skills in Python MATLAB C or similar scientific computing environments including high-performance and GPU computing.
- A strong scientific track record evidenced by high-quality publications and other demonstrable research outputs.
- The ability to independently initiate conduct and deliver high-quality academic research.
- Strong communication leadership and project-management skills with a proven ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule.
- Excellent written and verbal proficiency in English.
- A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for coaching PhD and Masters students while working in an interdisciplinary team.
