Lecturer in BosnianCroatianSerbian Language Acquisition and Linguistics

The University of Amsterdam is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive lecturer to teach and develop Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language proficiency courses. The Slavic Languages and Cultures programme at the University of Amsterdam provides high-quality education in the fields of language acquisition linguistics literature and culture of a region that plays a significant role in global politics. It is the only programme in the Netherlands that offers Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian at an academic level.

Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language acquisition is taught at six levels ranging from absolute beginners to advanced learners and is offered to various types of students at the University of Amsterdam. You will contribute to the development of teaching materials and coordinate practical matters related to your own tutorial groups (such as administration and communication with students). You will actively participate in the functioning of the programme and in project groups. To carry out these tasks we are looking for a creative colleague with strong didactic skills and an excellent command of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian.

This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to language education within a broad academic context while working with a diverse and international student population.

In consultation with colleagues teaching Russian Polish and Czech language proficiency and linguistics you will teach high-quality classes that enable students to reach a B1/B2 level in Bosnian/Croatian/ addition you will:

• preparing and delivering classes
• assessing student work (assignments exams)
• contribute to innovation through the development of teaching materials and educational projects;
• keep up with academic literature and integrate new research insights into your teaching;
• coordinate practical matters related to your own tutorial groups (such as administration and communication with students);
• participate in project working groups.

You have previous experience in teaching Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language proficiency up to B2/C1 level in a higher education setting in the Netherlands and;

• a completed university degree in a relevant field (with a focus on language acquisition and linguistics);
• excellent command of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian;
• pedagogical and didactic skills (the ability to adapt to students starting levels deliver well-structured teaching mentor students and actively contribute to consultations with fellow lecturers);
• you are a reliable team player;
• you possess strong organizational skills;
• you are well-informed about recent insights in the field of (second) language acquisition and language teaching and able to apply these to teaching practice;
• you hold a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you do not yet have a UTQ you are required to commence the UTQ programme upon starting your employment and to obtain the qualification within three years;
• you have a good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch we offer you the opportunity to take part in the State Examination in Dutch as a Second Language II programme.

We offer a temporary position for 12 hours a week for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The preferred starting date is August 1 2026.

Your salary depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract ranges between 3.546 to 5.538 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 83% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
