Job Description

The research section Processing and Performance of Materials (P&P) conducts research at the forefront of science to develop tailor-made and high-performance polymer-based materials for a large variety of application sectors such as food commodity engineering polymers energy and transportation (automotive aviation). An integral part in all of these research activities are the state-of-the-art experiments that are performed in our labs: Polymer Processing Lab Rheology Lab Structured Fluids Lab Laser Lab Mechanical Testing Lab and Fatigue Lab. As a Laboratory Manager in our labs you will play a central role in enabling research in the field of polymer technology: You will keep track of all equipment and devices in the lab and carry out regular maintenance calibration and repairs of machines and instruments. You manage the stock of materials and consumables handle purchasing and keep storage tidy including safe disposal of chemicals. Safety is a core part of the job: you enforce safety rules carry out inspections and keep the required documentation up to date. You also train students and staff to use lab equipment safely and independently and support them with practical questions lab procedures and their projects. Beyond that you help set up experiments assist with demonstrations and support data collection for teaching and research. You will work with a diverse group of people from various engineering backgrounds. The P&P Labs are a dynamic place where you will play a key role in driving innovation in polymer technology.

Job Requirements
  • A university of applied sciences or higher education (HBO) in mechanical engineering chemical engineering materials science or a related technical field.
  • Experience in a chemical or mechanical engineering lab workshop or technical environment.
  • Proficiency in working safely with chemicals.
  • Knowledge of machine tools mechanical testing equipment and laboratory safety standards including chemical safety standards.
  • Strong organizational skills: managing multiple tasks maintain inventory and enforce standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written Dutch and English) and team-work skills to work well with students researchers and external partners.
  • Approachable and proactive attitude.

Nice-to-have Skills:

  • Work experience or specialized training in polymer science/technology.
  • Familiarity with mechanical testing fluid systems or thermal analysis equipment.
  • Experience in the development of safety procedures for the laboratory environment.
  • Experience in an academic or research setting.
  • Experience in working with students.
  • Experience with digital fabrication tools.
