Mission

To safely and collaboratively perform all types of mechanical and electrical work in substations equipped with high medium and low voltage systems from the initial stages of construction through to commissioning. All installation activities shall be carried out in accordance with the instructions of site supervision Health & Safety personnel and Quality Control by interpreting the projects official technical documentation and applying the relevant technical standards.

The work will be performed as part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of several professionals and led by one of its members. Installation activities and where required fault diagnosis and repair will be carried out on high medium and low voltage electrical systems as well as associated equipment. Technicians will be responsible for preparing all required resources including tools and materials in coordination with the rest of the team.

The High Voltage Electrician position is a fully qualified journey-level trade classification. It involves performing specialized high voltage electrical work in accordance with established trade practices following the successful completion of formal vocational a construction environment there are also numerous supporting activities including logistics and various auxiliary installation tasks in which all personnel are expected to participate to ensure the successful completion of the project.

This high voltage classification differs from other electrical trades in that it involves systems operating above 1000 volts AC. However all work shall be performed under de-energized conditions. It is further distinguished by the scope of work and the level of technical expertise required. Personnel at this level may supervise less experienced assistants on projects provide practical training to apprentices and work independently or in coordination with other trades.

Key Responsibilities

The High Voltage Electrician shall be responsible for but not limited to the following duties:

  • Carry out electrical mechanical and commissioning installations in electrical substations including transformers circuit breakers disconnectors steel structures grounding systems control and protection panels high medium and low voltage conductors together with all associated equipment.
  • Fabricate and install a wide range of components including but not limited to cable support systems cable installations equipment support structures and foundations columns transformers and low voltage electrical panels.
  • Install inspect and test components of high medium and low voltage power distribution systems and isolate and clear system sections for maintenance installation or load reduction activities.
  • Inspect overhead and underground electrical distribution systems perform testing and accurately document the results.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Support internal capital and company projects including commissioning testing and inspection of completed installations.
  • Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and install safety tags barriers warning signs and protective devices.
  • Supervise the work of unskilled or semi-skilled assistants on projects while ensuring full compliance with safety procedures and regulations.
  • Provide practical on-the-job training to apprentices.
  • Operate a variety of testing calibration and repair equipment as well as trade tools and instruments including voltmeters ammeters ohmmeters insulation resistance testers high voltage test equipment circuit breaker test equipment and similar devices.

Required Skills and Competencies

Qualifications & Training

Recognised apprenticeship certificate accredited technical school qualification or equivalent combination of relevant experience and training comparable to the level of a qualified High-Voltage Electrician.

  • Solid knowledge of electrical theory and terminology.
  • Knowledge of the methods materials tools and equipment used for the maintenance repair and testing of medium- and high-voltage systems including both overhead and underground systems and associated equipment.
  • Good understanding of high-voltage electrical safety standards and safe working practices including maintaining safe distances and working on energised lines and equipment.
  • Basic skills in work planning and estimating.
  • Spanish is the primary working language. Proficiency in a second language preferably English or Portuguese is an advantage.

Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience working in high-voltage substations.
