Health and Safety Officer
Job Summary
Job Purpose
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment by developing implementing and monitoring health and safety policies and processes across all operations. The role focuses on risk prevention regulatory compliance incident management and promoting a strong safety culture across all project sites and activities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Health & Safety Compliance
Ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and other relevant Kenyan regulations.
Monitor adherence to company safety policies procedures and processes across all sites.
Conduct regular site inspections audits and risk assessments.
2. Risk Management
Identify potential hazards and implement appropriate control measures.
Develop safe work methods and ensure all employees follow them.
Maintain up-to-date risk registers for the assigned projects.
3. Training & Awareness
Conduct health and safety induction for new employees and subcontractors.
Organize safety training sessions toolbox talks and emergency drills.
Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture across the organization.
4. Incident Management
Investigate accidents incidents and near-misses.
Prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions.
Monitor and ensure implementation of preventive measures.
5. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate safety records reports and documentation.
Prepare periodic safety performance reports for management.
Ensure proper documentation of inspections permits and compliance activities.
6. Emergency Preparedness
Develop and implement emergency response plans.
Ensure availability and proper maintenance of safety equipment (PPE fire extinguishers etc.).
Coordinate emergency response activities when necessary.
7. Continuous Improvement
Recommend improvements to enhance workplace safety and operational efficiency.
Stay updated on health and safety legislation and industry best practices.
Qualifications :
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelors Degree in Occupational Health & Safety Environmental Science Engineering or a related field.
Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience preferably in engineering construction or industrial environments.
Registration with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS) in Kenya.
NEBOSH IOSH or equivalent certification is an added advantage.
