A survey crew chief is responsible for leading a team of surveyors to carry out land surveys. Their job duties may include:

  • Planning and organizing survey projects including determining survey methods equipment needs and scheduling.
  • Conducting land surveys using various equipment such as total stations GPS receivers and levels.
  • Ensuring that survey equipment is properly calibrated and functioning correctly.
  • Supervising and training survey assistants assigning tasks and responsibilities as necessary.
  • Collecting and analyzing survey data using computeraided design (CAD) software and other tools.
  • Interpreting survey data and creating maps drawings and reports based on the results.
  • Communicating with project managers engineers and other professionals to ensure that survey work is aligned with project requirements.
  • Ensuring that all survey work is completed in accordance with industry standards legal requirements and project specifications.
  • Maintaining accurate records of survey data reports and other documentation.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to junior surveyors and assistants.

Survey crew chiefs may work in a variety of settings including construction sites urban areas and remote locations. They should have a thorough understanding of land surveying principles as well as strong organizational and communication skills. A bachelor's degree in surveying or a related field is typically required along with professional licensure in some jurisdictions.
