JOB OBJECTIVE:
To manage the Group s entire litigation portfolio by developing strategies for the containment of litigation risks providing critical analysis of cases and effectively monitoring litigation; as well as provide endtoend total legal support on matters emanating from the regional legal offices through legal documentation negotiations and legal opinions.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Carry out daytoday management of the litigation portfolio of the Bank and related companies which litigation portfolios are managed by the Bank.
2. Assist the Group Chief Legal Counsel and Group Head Legal Services in the formulation of appropriate strategy to ensure optimal performance of the Division.
3. Interface (working with the audit team or otherwise) with Police Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other law enforcement agencies on investigations claims to minimize disruption to business.
4. Provide support to the recovery team in effectively managing delinquent accounts and recovery activities.
5. Develop and maintain a reliable and robust case management system and processes for the Bank for case monitoring tracking and documentation management for seamless archiving and retrievals with the overall intent for confidentiality better accountability and information usage.
6. Coordinate under the leadership of the Group Chief Legal Counsel and Group Head Legal Services the review and issuance of daytoday legal opinions and advisory services to the entire Bank customer complaints with potential legal claims investigation activities and interface with law enforcement agencies.
7. Equip colleagues with an understanding of basic and common litigation issues potential risk factors and basic procedures so that they can meet the challenges posed by an increasingly litigious environment.
8. Support the implementation of the strategies plans and programs towards the actualization of the department s goals and objectives.
9. Review the first and second level Case file and court processes reviews conducted by Team Leads and Legal Officers in the Unit respectively; evaluates the merits of same visaviz the strategy for pursuit same including but not limited to litigation arbitration amicable settlement etc and makes recommendations thereon to the Group Chief Legal Counsel and Group Head Legal Services.
10. Handle selective high profile and sensitive matters and task within the Litigation Unit
11. Render litigation service support to the Group companies as and when requested.
12. Vet and interpret documents required for lending transactions to ensure adequacy of terms and conditions for the Bank s purpose. 13. Represent the Group Chief Legal Counsel and Group Head Legal Services at meetings.
14. Lead supervise and provide guidance/direction to the Team Leads and Legal Officers in the Head Office and Regions in the daytoday performance of their official duties with a view to ensuring efficiency performance optimization and excellent service delivery. 15. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Group Chief Legal Counsel.

Requirements

This role requires that the job holder possesses/is able to:
Work Experience as in house counsel in a Financial Institution
Must be technology savvy Must be up to date on new laws and enactments
Evaluate situations calculate and reduce risk justify and defend accuracy give reasons for views and generally provide shrewd judgement in any situation.
Remain rational when dealing with others work within organizational requirements be systematic and factual when dealing with colleagues and handle conflict adopting a logical and unemotional approach until a solution becomes achievable.
Ensure that corrective action plans are formulated and implemented.
Work persistently when gathering information and seeking solutions to problems.
Listen absorb and digest information and at the same time build and capitalize stable relationships.
Provide satisfactory solutions in situations involving the new and unexpected.
Take appropriate decisions whilst at the same time ensuring that others do likewise.
Draw conclusions by probing problems and issues and contemplate the consequences of any action that is likely to be taken testing the reliability of the information available.

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge of Banking Operations
Drafting Skills
Knowledge of Civil Procedure Rules
Knowledge of Administration of Criminal Justice Act
Knowledge of Case Law Understanding Court Processes & Court Orders
Knowledge of the Rules on Foreclosure and Mortgages
Knowledge of the Receivership Process
Knowledge of CBN Rules and Circulars

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION: LL.B (Hons). LLM or other Higher or other professional qualification would be added advantage.

EXPERIENCE: At least 10 years relevant post call experience.
