WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:- Conduct manual comparisons of inked and digital fingerprints and palm prints as well as perform examinations using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
- Responsibilities include verifying/excluding identities preparing detailed reports maintaining accurate records and providing expert testimony in court when required.
- Deliver training on fingerprint-related practices and procedures.
- This position plays a critical role in supporting identity verification/exclusion for both criminal justice and applicant processing.

This position is in East Anchorage at the Department of Public Safety Headquarters offering scenic views of the Chugach Mountains along with convenient access to parking public transit and nearby trails. You will work in a shared office environment alongside supportive ABIS Unit staff fostering teamwork collaboration and a positive work atmosphere.

More information about the Department of Public Safety can be found on our website: QualificationsFINGERPRINT TECHNICIAN 1: Two years of experience that provided knowledge of handling confidential information adhering to legal procedures and/or performing data analysis as typically found in direct support of commissioned certified or other professional criminal justice or law enforcement staff in the performance of their mission. Substitution:
Post-secondary education from an accredited college that included 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours in physical science courses such as chemistry biology physics or criminalistics; criminal justice courses such as research methods data analysis or development of law; or legal studies courses such as criminal law and procedure or legal research may be substituted for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).FINGERPRINT TECHNICIAN 2: Completion of a recognized training plan as a Fingerprint Technician 1 with the State of Alaska.
OR
Two years of technical fingerprint classification experience in a law enforcement agency which included fingerprint pattern recognition and fingerprint classification; fingerprint comparisons of inked prints; taking fingerprints; and preparing for court appearances as an expert witness in the science of fingerprints.
OR
A current Latent Print Certification or Tenprint Fingerprint Certification issued by the International Association for Identification.
Special Note:
A background investigation including a criminal record check for convictions of felony crimes or serious misdemeanors is required at the time of initial hire.
Technical fingerprint classification experience is defined as experience requiring the application of the basic technique of fingerprint science in determination of pattern types though ridge counting whorl tracings and use of the Henry Method of Classification.Additional Required Information

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at level 1 promotion to level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
BACKGROUND CHECKThis position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position and required access to APSIN an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

The successful candidate will be required to read understand and agree to via signature an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
