The YMCA of Greater Toronto is a charity offering opportunities for personal growth community involvement and leadership.â Our full service health and fitness centres across the Greater Toronto Area provide a variety of health fitness recreation and community programsâ to thousands of members including children youth and adults who represent the diversity of Greater Toronto and its communities.
In these roles you will:
Lifeguard Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Lifesaving Society and YMCA.
- Ensure that members volunteers and other staff adhere to pool conduct guidelines and maintain order in his/her designated area as a proactive approach to ensuring safety and accident prevention.
- Set up and take down recreational program and other equipment as required at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation).
- Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift.
- Assist staff team in some cleaning duties related to pool and equipment.
Instructor Aquafit Responsibilities:
- Teach an Aquafit class to YMCA instructor standards including teaching pre-choreographed Aquafit as required.
- Ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are followed and respond as trained by the Lifesaving Society and YMCA in emergencies.
- Maintain order in designated areas to ensure safety and accident prevention ensuring members volunteers and staff adhere to pool conduct guidelines.
- Set up and take down equipment as required checking for safety and good repair and report malfunctions immediately removing damaged equipment from circulation.
- Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift.
Instructor Swim Lessons Responsibilities:
- Ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
- Deliver course content and examine participants following established YMCA criteria.
- Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans.
- Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly.
- Coach and develop participants to meet success.
- Communicate (verbal and written) childs progress to parents and Team Leaders.
- Maintain accurate up to date weekly progress sheets and records for participants.
- Take attendance ensure participants are signed into and out of the program.
- Set up and take down recreational program and other equipment as required at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation).
Instructor-Examiner Lifesaving Bronze Responsibilities:
- Teach in the aquatic area ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to and respond in the event of an emergency as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
- Deliver course content and examine participants following established Lifesaving Society criteria.
- Plan organize and implement course lesson plans.
- Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly.
- Coach and develop participants to meet success.
Lifesaving Sport Coach Responsibilities:
- Ensure all safety and lifeguarding procedures are adheredto andrespondin the event ofan emergency as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
- Deliver course content following established YMCA and Lifesaving Society Criteria.
- Coach and develop participants to meet success.
- Communicate progress (verbal and written) to participants and their families.
- Take attendance and ensure participants are signed into and out of the program.
- Set up and take down recreational program and other equipment asrequired check that equipment is safe and in good repair reportimmediatelyall malfunctions and remove damaged equipmentimmediatelyfrom circulation.
Instructor Exam Lifesaving National Lifeguard Responsibilities:
- Teachin the aquatic area ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
- Deliver course content and examineparticipants following established Lifesaving Society criteria
- Plan organize and implement course lesson plans.
- Recognizeparticipant learning styles and delivers content accordingly.
- Coachand develop participants to meet success.
Instructor Examiner Lifesaving Standard First Aid Responsibilities:
- Teach in the aquatic area ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are followed and respond in emergencies as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
- Deliver course content and examine participants following Lifesaving Society criteria.
- Plan organize and implement course lesson plans.
- Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly.
- Coach and develop participants for success.
Team Leader Swim Lessons Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and coaching to swiminstructors to ensure all YMCA Quality Indicators are met in swimming lessons.
- Managesign inandsign outprocedures during the transitions between classes to ensure childrenare safe at all timesand best practices and procedures to ensure child safety are being followed consistently.
- Ensure all regulatory and YMCA standards are metthroughout the lesson period andrespondsimmediatelyto rectify all safety andemergency concerns.
- Continuously buildpositive relationships withchildren parents staff and volunteers during theirshift dealing with concerns as they arise.
- Ensureprogram coverage gaps and other challengesare resolvedas theyemerge.
- Manage the pool area to ensureappropriate allocationof space for each group.
- Immediatelyassistinstructors when classes become large or unmanageable;frequentlyparticipatein the class todemonstrateeffective teaching techniques.
- Providesupport and is present during the entire duty throughall program areas in rotation to ensure the above statedobjectivesarebeing met.
- Remainvisible and approachable at all times.
- Manage administrative responsibility for attendance and waitlists asrequired.
General Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; take a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represent the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
- Understand the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Childrens Aid Society.
- Understand the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members volunteers donors and staff.
- Actively participate in scheduled programs meetings and special events.
- Collaborate with program members volunteers and YMCA staff assist and encourage program members to access additional appropriate programs offered.
- Ensurequalifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times.
- Perform other related duties to fulfill commitment to quality programs for all members as assigned from time to time by supervisor.
You bring:
Canada Summer Jobs Criteria:
- Be between 16 to 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- It is a funding requirement of this position that candidates must be a Canadian citizen permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
Lifeguard Qualifications:
- Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Award Standard First Aid & CPR level C or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED
- Previous experience in lifeguarding an asset
Instructor Aquafit Qualifications:
- Current certification in YMCA Aquafit (or equivalent CALA Water ART)
- Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards:National Lifeguard (NL) Award Standard First Aid & CPR level C or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED
- Previousexperience in lifeguarding an asset
Instructor Swim Lessons Qualifications:
- Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Standard First Aid & CPR level C or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED
- Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification
- Previous experience instructing swim lessons an asset

Instructor-Examiner Lifesaving National Lifeguard Qualifications:
- Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Standard First Aid & CPR level C or or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED Instructor and Examiner in one or more of the following: National Lifeguard Instructor Trainer
- Previousexperience Instructing Lifesaving Courses an asset
Instructor-Examiner Lifesaving Standard First Aid Qualifications:
- Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Standard First Aid & CPR level C or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner
- Previous experience Instructing Lifesaving Courses an asset
Team Leader Swim Lessons Qualifications:
- Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Standard First Aid and CPR level C or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED YMCA Swim Instructor
- Minimum of 1 year experience delivering YMCA Swim Lessons at the effective level
- Minimum of 6 months experience coaching and developing others
- Demonstrated experience in effective coaching and development skills
- Ability to encourage and motivate membersvolunteersand staff and to acknowledge and appreciate achievements and contributions
- Ability to deal effectively with escalated member concerns and achieve successful outcomes
- Proficiencywith computer software including Word Excel Outlook etc.
- Flexibilityregardingassigned hours of work includingevenings (must be available Thursdays 3:45 7:30pm) and weekends
General Qualifications:
- Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with participants
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail
- Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work including early mornings days evenings and weekends
