The OPM Road Inventory Section is seeking a Road Inventory Senior Support Engineer who is passionate about road infrastructure eager to contribute to our secondary road program and ready to enhance our road inventory related data.
Under the direction of the Road Inventory Engineer the chosen candidate will:
Serve as the lead technical expert in the collection and entry of road inventory data into the Linear Referencing System (LRS) using GIS software while developing improved QA/QC processes for event data. Additionally the selected candidate will develop more efficient automated methods for data entry and project documentation.
Assist in the preparation review and final submission of Board of Transportation (BOT) agenda items for BOT approval ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Provide day-to-day knowledge and support to the 14 NCDOT Highway Divisions related to petition packages of road addition/abandonment and their preparation/submittal for final review the Subdivision Road Minimum Construction Standards manual and all other related secondary roads related policies and this role the selected candidate develops and conducts in-person and online training for Division and District offices in support of these processes and their associated policies.
Assist with road research and data requests related to the state-maintained road system while monitoring the research progress of the Road Inventory section staff to ensure timely responses to agency and customer requests.
Assist the Road Inventory Engineer with all data collection processes related to the unpaved roads priority listing and the paving of secondary roads.
Additionally the selected candidate will take on other responsibilities as needed to support the Road Inventory Section and its mission.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18/$63927 - $111871
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance or construction practices.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing to address moderately complex engineering principles and policies and standard operating procedures.
- Experience with reading and interpreting information on highway construction plans.
- Working knowledge of GIS software and GIS databases.
- Experience preparing and conducting technical training.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
