Job Summary

SH 930 Public Health Data Engineer Indiana

Position Overview:
This position works under the general direction of the Data Systems Lead or Epidemiology Leadership. The Public Health Data Engineer is responsible for building cleaning validating automating and documenting public health data workflows that support dashboards reporting epidemiologic analysis and program decision making. This role prepares recurring data streams for reliable use across business intelligence GIS analytics and client deliverable work. The Public Health Data Engineer is an integral member of the public health data team contributing to accurate reproducible and well-documented data infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build clean validate and document recurring public health data streams to ensure data integrity and reliability.
  • Create reproducible workflows using R SAS SQL or comparable tools to support analytic and reporting needs.
  • Prepare dashboard source files for Tableau Power BI ESRI or related systems to enable effective data visualization.
  • Establish GitHub workflows for version control code review and technical handoff to support team collaboration.
  • Create data dictionaries processing logs refresh documentation and quality assurance checks to maintain transparent and auditable data processes.
  • Coordinate with epidemiology dashboard GIS and data stakeholders to align data workflows with program and client needs.
  • Support automated refreshes and recurring data pipelines to streamline data delivery.
  • Ensure documentation is up-to-date and accessible for technical and non-technical team members.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelors degree in public health data science computer science informatics or a related field required. Masters degree preferred.
  • Certifications: None required. Relevant data or public health certifications preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in data engineering data analysis or a related role required. Public health surveillance opioid substance use STI or population health data experience strongly preferred.
  • Skills: Advanced R programming experience required. Working knowledge of SAS SQL or comparable data systems. Experience preparing analytic datasets for dashboards reporting or surveillance products. Experience with GitHub or version control. Strong technical documentation skills. Ability to communicate clearly with epidemiologists dashboard developers GIS specialists and program stakeholders.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds. Position requires sitting for extended periods of time use of hands to finger handle or feel over 66% of time on duty. Full ability to talk and hear. Correctable vision required. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
