SH 932 Senior Epidemiologist or Data Scientist Indiana
Position Overview:
This senior-level position works under the general direction of the Project Director/Lead Analyst. Responsibilities include leading analytic design measure development statistical interpretation and public health quality review for population health dashboards reports and data products. The Senior Epidemiologist or Data Scientist is an integral member of the public health analytics team ensuring that indicators stratifications limitations and analytic decisions are methodologically sound and usable for public health action.
Key Responsibilities
- Define public health indicators including numerator logic denominator logic stratifications and limitations for population health dashboards and reports.
- Lead analytic design for opioid Narcan emergency department visit annual report and future denominator-based workstreams.
- Review dashboard metrics for epidemiologic validity ensuring accuracy and relevance for public health decision-making.
- Support statistical summaries trend analysis modeling readiness and suppression logic to maintain data quality and confidentiality standards.
- Write clear methods language and analytic interpretation for client deliverables translating technical findings into actionable insights.
- Guide junior analytic staff and review outputs before release ensuring methodological rigor and consistency.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including data engineers dashboard developers and public health subject matter experts.
- Participate in required training in-service education programs and team meetings to maintain and enhance skills.
- Assist in maintaining organized documentation of analytic decisions code and data dictionaries to ensure reproducibility.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders including health department partners to support coordinated public health response.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Graduate training or equivalent experience in epidemiology biostatistics data science or public health analytics required.
- Certifications: None required. Optional: Relevant public health or analytics certification preferred.
- Experience: Demonstrated experience in public health surveillance statistical interpretation and translating technical methods into usable findings required. Experience supervising junior analysts required.
- Skills: Strong statistical interpretation skills with the ability to handle complex analytic decisions. Advanced R skills required. Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences including clients and public health stakeholders.

- Prepare for the possibility of evolving data requirements or unexpected analytic challenges to occur.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds occasionally. Position requires sitting between 66% and 100% of time on duty. Use of hands to finger handle or feel over 66% of time on duty. Reaching with hands or arms less than 33% of time. Full ability to talk and hear. Correctable vision required. Extended periods of computer work required.
