Description / Position Overview
- Traffic Signal Specialist IAbout the Job: This entry-level role maintains and troubleshoots traffic signal and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) while receiving on-the-job training. It also performs firmware and software upgrades responds to emergencies in the field and supports the development of incident response protocols.
Work Schedule: This position requires availability for on call rotation.This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year.

As a Traffic Signal Specialist I you will:- Assist in the installation maintenance and repair of traffic signal cabinets pedestrian indications and school flasher systems
- Assist with cabinet wiring grounding and component replacement including load switches power supplies Malfunction Management Units (MMUs) and relays
- Perform basic troubleshooting of electrical and electronic signal components under supervision
- Assist with installation and maintenance of vehicle detection systems including video detection and radar
- Support installation of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) field devices such as closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras dynamic message signs field switches and radios
- Assist with pulling labeling and terminating fiber optic and copper communication cables
- Perform preventative maintenance inspections and report deficiencies
- Set up and remove traffic control devices in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards
- Maintain basic records of work performed and materials used
- Respond to emergency signal malfunctions as assigned

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:- Engineering plans schematics and diagrams
- Traffic signal emergency response protocols
- Basic electrical principles and safety practices.
- Learn traffic signal systems and field equipment.
- Follow wiring diagrams and technical manuals.
- Work safely in traffic and around energized equipment.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED)
- One year of full-time professional experience in a related field.

- A current and valid non-probationary drivers license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
- Technical coursework in electronics electrical or telecommunications
- Experience with roadway or utility fieldwork
- Willingness and ability to obtain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work zone/American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATTSA) Level 1 certification within 18 months of hire
