Job Summary

Job Title: Dyslexia Instructional Aide

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Department: Curriculum & Instruction

Reports To: Campus Principal & Dyslexia Coordinator

Approved By: Superintendent

SUMMARY:

The Dyslexia Instructional Aide assists the Dyslexia Teacher in the implementation of the district dyslexia program and provides instructional and clerical support to meet the reading intervention needs of students identified with dyslexia. This position works under the direct supervision of a certified dyslexia teacher and supports small group and individual instruction classroom organization data collection and student management to improve student literacy outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Support

  1. Assist the Dyslexia Teacher in preparing instructional materials lesson activities and classroom displays related to the dyslexia program.
  2. Provide instructional support to individual students or small groups as directed using research-based dyslexia strategies.
  3. Reinforce lessons introduced by the Dyslexia Teacher by guiding practice activities and structured exercises.
  4. Assist with accommodations and instructional strategies identified in students IEPs or Section 504 plans under teacher supervision.
  5. Help administer and score instructional assignments progress monitoring tools and objective testing instruments as directed.
  6. Assist in maintaining accurate student records intervention logs and documentation of services provided.
  7. Support in-person virtual and blended learning activities for students receiving dyslexia services.

Student Management

  1. Help manage student behavior during instructional sessions in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
  2. Supervise students during dyslexia instructional periods and transitions as assigned.
  3. Observe students and communicate progress concerns or special needs to the Dyslexia Teacher in a timely manner.
  4. Serve as a positive role model and provide encouragement and targeted support to students.

Professional Responsibilities

  1. Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and sensitive information.
  2. Participate in staff development and training related to dyslexia instruction and job performance.
  3. Attend faculty meetings ARD or 504 meetings as assigned and participate in special events.
  4. Exercise professional judgment in attendance; be punctual for work meetings and assigned duties.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor Dyslexia Teacher or program director.

Other

  1. Help maintain a clean safe and orderly instructional environment.
  2. Assist with inventory care and maintenance of instructional materials technology and equipment used in the dyslexia program.
  3. Support substitute teachers assigned to dyslexia classrooms by providing orientation and materials as needed.
  4. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures at all times

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSES/EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED

Completed two (2) years/48 hours of study at an institution of higher education; or

Obtained an Associates Degree (or higher)

Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Some experience working with children

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to administrators teachers peers students parents and the school community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work well with children. Working knowledge of copier personal computer typewriter and audiovisual equipment. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand walk sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls and climb or balance. Moderate stooping bending kneeling crouching crawling and lifting is required of this employee. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and peripheral vision. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment. The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person.
