The Railcar Maintenance Technician I is an entry-level skilled position responsible for inspecting maintaining and repairing railcars to ensure safe and reliable operation. This role supports compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and company safety standards. The technician will perform preventative maintenance troubleshooting and basic repairs on railcar mechanical and electrical systems. An electrical background is preferred to assist with troubleshooting and maintaining railcar electrical components.
Key Activities
- Perform inspection maintenance and repair of railcars in accordance with FRA regulations AAR standards and company procedures.
- Conduct pre-service and scheduled inspections of railcar components including braking systems couplers wheels draft gear safety appliances and structural components.
- Assist with preventative maintenance programs to maintain fleet reliability and compliance.
- Troubleshoot and repair basic electrical systems including lighting battery systems wiring sensors and auxiliary electrical components.
- Perform mechanical repairs such as replacing brake shoes gaskets valves air lines and other railcar components.
- Utilize diagnostic tools testing equipment and hand tools to identify issues and perform repairs.
- Complete required inspection documentation and maintenance records in accordance with FRA requirements.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with safety procedures lockout/tagout policies and environmental guidelines.
- Support senior technicians during major repairs overhauls or rebuilds.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow proper housekeeping procedures.
- Report safety hazards equipment issues and maintenance concerns to supervision.
FRA Compliance Responsibilities
- Perform inspections in accordance with applicable Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations including but not limited to:
- 49 CFR Part 2229 Rail Locomotive and Safety Standards
- 49 CFR Part 238 Passenger Equipment Safety Standards
- Identify and report defective railcar components that may affect safe operation.
- Ensure railcars meet regulatory standards prior to return to service.
- Maintain accurate inspection and repair documentation as required by FRA guidelines.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand and power tools
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals maintenance procedures and safety regulations
- Ability to work in outdoor rail yard environments in various weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
- Ability to pass required railroad safety training and certifications
- Electrical or electromechanical background (vocational training certification or work experience) preferred
- Experience working with rail equipment heavy machinery or industrial maintenance preferred
- Knowledge of railcar brake systems and pneumatic systems preferred
- Basic experience troubleshooting low-voltage electrical systems preferred
- Fluent in English (both verbal and written)
