Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
Two positions available each at 25 hours per week
Shifts available between 7am and 7pm the two positions combined must cover all 7 days a week
Position Overview:
The Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) houses a diverse collection of fish herptiles invertebrates and a colony of Big Brown Bats. The geographic focus of the collection is terrestrial and freshwater fauna of eastern North America with some non-native species to showcase the evolutionary diversity of life on Earth. Animals are housed both on exhibit and behind the scenes and are used for public programming via Programs-on-Wheels offsite outreach and presentations within CMCs Museum of Natural History & Science and Childrens Museum.
The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for the daily care and enrichment of CMCs Live Animal Collection. This position performs daily animal habitat maintenance as well as interacting with the public to provide educational programming. The Animal Care Specialist will train and mentor interns and youth and adult volunteers.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide daily care for animals in the Live Animals collection including wellness checks diet preparation handling and enrichment. Act in accordance with USDA ODNR USFW and other applicable state and federal permit guidelines.
  • Provide daily cleaning of habitats dishes linens and Animal Resources work room. Regularly deep clean habitats and work room.
  • Keep daily records of animal feedings shed activity and program use.
  • Weekly check aquarium water chemistry and provide regular water changes.
  • Facilitate regular health screenings of all animals including transport to Veterinarian appointments.
  • Train volunteers interns and staff on animal handling transport and program presentation. Maintain personnel training records.
  • Compile orders for animal food enrichment and other supplies. Submit orders to supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Present regular in-house programs to museum guests during operating hours on animal diversity ecology and conservation. Participate in occasional after-hours events with advance notice provided.
  • Communicate daily with Programs-on-Wheels and Guest Services staff to coordinate animal use in programs. Record and maintain program statistics.
  • Communicate daily with other Zoology staff members about animal welfare food and supply needs and public programming.
  • Communicate with Exhibits staff regularly to coordinate access and repair of animal habitats and aquariums on exhibit.
  • Have or be willing to obtain and maintain rabies vaccination (vaccination costs paid by CMC).
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in biology zoology animal science or a related field preferred.
  • At least one year of experience caring for captive non-domestic animals in a zoo aquarium museum university research wildlife rehabilitation or similar setting.
  • Experience working with the public and as a member of a team.
  • Preference given to individuals with experience caring for bats in a captive setting.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with informal science education public speaking and/or public engagement especially with children and families.
  • Strong observational skills to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health diet and behavior.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions including procedures for care and maintenance of animals and habitats.
  • Strong collaboration skills and team ethic.
Working Conditions:
  • Candidate must have a valid clean drivers license. Specialists will occasionally use a personal vehicle to drive off-site to animal and feed supply stores.
  • This position offers 25 hours per week with occasional additional hours for evening events. The two Specialists will together cover 7 days of operation with a short time of weekly overlap to communicate about animal needs.
Physical Requirements:
  • Candidate must be able to stand or sit or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Candidate should be able to walk up and down two flights of stairs and navigate floors that are uneven and/or ramped.
  • Candidate must be comfortable lifting 30 pounds by themselves.
  • Candidate must be comfortable climbing and working from ladders.
  • Candidate must be comfortable handling and presenting several species of animals.
