Mission / Core Purpose of the Role
The Laboratory Manager will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of the laboratory to ensure accurate timely and cost-effective diagnostic testing and reporting.
The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory quality and accreditation standards while driving operational efficiency workflow optimization and continuous improvement in laboratory services.
The ideal candidate will ensure high standards of patient care safety and service delivery while collaborating with internal stakeholders to enhance turnaround time and overall service performance.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations Management
Oversee all laboratory operations to ensure efficiency accuracy and compliance with established standards and SOPs.
Supervise laboratory workflows capacity planning and operational performance.
Ensure timely and accurate processing testing and reporting of laboratory results.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Ensure full compliance with regulatory accreditation and quality standards (including ISO and related frameworks).
Work closely with Quality Assurance teams to identify investigate and resolve non-conformances.
Enforce adherence to laboratory policies procedures and internal controls.
Leadership & Team Management
Supervise laboratory staff assign duties and manage work schedules.
Conduct performance management coaching and staff development.
Foster a high-performance culture focused on accountability and excellence.
Process Improvement & Operational Excellence
Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory performance.
Serve as a change agent by driving adherence to SOPs and operational best practices.
Monitor key operational metrics including turnaround time (TAT) cost per analysis and productivity.
Equipment & Inventory Management
Oversee maintenance calibration and optimal utilization of laboratory equipment.
Manage inventory of reagents and consumables to ensure uninterrupted operations and minimize wastage.
Implement contingency and backup plans to prevent service disruptions.
Stakeholder & Client Relationship Management
Collaborate with Client Services clinicians and internal teams to improve service delivery and turnaround time.
Build strong working relationships across departments to enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Address and resolve client complaints and service issues in collaboration with relevant teams.
Reporting & Performance Monitoring
Track and report laboratory KPIs regularly to management.
Provide operational reports highlighting performance risks and improvement areas.
Ensure consistent achievement of laboratory performance targets.
Health Safety & Regulatory Standards
Ensure strict adherence to health safety and environmental regulations within the laboratory.
Maintain a safe working environment for staff and compliance with industry standards.
Requirements / Qualifications
Education
Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
Must be registered with MLSCN.
Membership of AMLSN is an added advantage.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in a medical laboratory setting.
Prior supervisory or management experience is required.
Experience across multiple laboratory departments is highly desirable.
Technical Knowledge
Strong knowledge of laboratory operations testing methodologies and instrumentation.
Understanding of laboratory quality systems and accreditation standards (ISO etc.).
Strong knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements.
Proficiency in LIMS and laboratory information systems.
Ability to analyze operational data and drive improvements.
