POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Howard County Recreation and Parks operates the Robinson Nature Center (RNC). This position performs intermediate level recreation services work ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Center. This position provides support to the full-time staff of the Center. This position will work closely with the Program Manager for assistance with program marketing including Social Media posts flyers posters and other duties as assigned. This position will assist in providing customer service and support for center operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist with ActiveNet memberships general admissions and program/special event registration.
- Perform opening and closing duties as assigned including responsibility of keys alarm codes and gates.
- Greet all visitors directs guests around the Center based on their interests or purpose for visiting.
- Daily monitoring of RNC voicemail and directing messages to appropriate party.
- Make phone calls as directed contacting participants with cancellations program updates and maintain program wait lists. Perform refunds when necessary.
- Set up and take down equipment for non-package rentals and special events.
- Create and maintain permits for Birthday Party rentals.
- Answer a multi-line phone and directs calls to the appropriate staff member.
- Use multi-channel scanning County radio.
- Provide marketing and program promotion to customers.
- Keep outside and inside kiosks and classrooms restocked with appropriate literature.
- Perform data processing including program attendance rental attendance and special event attendance.
- Assist with gift shop sales product placement and inventory.
- Maintain Outlook calendars with RNC programs rentals and meetings.
- Maintain cleanliness of Discovery Room Gift Shop and front Lobby.
- Communicate clearly and courteously with the public and coworkers including issues that could affect public safety.
- Provide support to full-time staff as needed.
- File permits and other paperwork.
- Provide administrative support including data processing filing completing center forms and daily cash drops.
- Monitor center patrons and enforce center rules. Report accidents injuries incidents and property loss/damage.
- Perform RNC safety and maintenance checks throughout the day.
- May be involved in handling emergency situations (i.e. customer accident/injury inclement weather lost child)
- Work with Administrative Aide and Program Manager on issues pertaining to registration rentals Gift Shop and Discovery Room.
- Relay exhibit and building operational and safety concerns to FT staff as necessary.
- Wear Recreation and Parks shirt and employee badge.
- Be trained in the use of the AED CPR and First Aid and other trainings as assigned by supervisor
- Assist with animal care as needed.
- Availability and flexibility to cover a variety of shift times as needed. Including early mornings late nights weekends and holidays.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
LEVEL II DUTIES:
Duties include all of the above plus the following:- Expert proficiency with ActiveNet membership and program registration to include running detailed reports and troubleshooting.
- Sets a positive example for fellow contingent staff provide leadership and share knowledge.
- Ability to advise and train other contingent staff.
- Provide facility tours.
- In absence of full-time staff be the point-of-contact for facility rental and grounds concerns for internal and external customers.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Read and follow written directions. Able to work independently on all shifts (late night and early morning and weekends). Ability to communicate with public safety officials in emergency and non-emergency situations communicate with park officials complete detailed reports ability to manage numerous activities within a facility. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective relationships with the public. Be flexible reliable responsible and enjoy working with the general public.
Level I: Have a basic understanding of recreation and park operations and two-years of experience working with the public in a variety of settings. Must have basic knowledge of nature center operations.Level II: Have an advanced knowledge of nature center operations and a minimum of one year experience at Robinson Nature Center.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION:
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency.
RATE OF PAY:
Contingent (salary commensurate with experience)
Level I: Minimum wage - $18.00/hour (Paraprofessional)
Level II: $18.00 - $21.00/hour (Professional)
