Primary Purpose
Provide students with reading improvement and other learning difficulties with appropriate learning activities and experience designed to help them fulfill their potential emotional physical and social growth. Enable students to develop competences and skills to function successfully in society.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
- Bachelors Degree
- Valid Texas Teachers Certification
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience with primary age children
Special Knowledge/Skills
- Participation in balanced literacy professional development
- Experience in research-based instructional practices
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Ability to collaborate with teachers
- Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills
Experience
- Five or more years of recent successful classroom with three years in this position
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Coursework and Professional Development
- Apply for Admission to Texas Womans University Graduate School
- Participate successfully in two graduate-level Reading Recovery courses during year 1
- Participate successfully in assessment training sessions
- Actively participate in training class discussions
- Complete Behind the Glass demonstration lessons least three times during the training year
- Successfully discontinue at least one student during the training year
- Attend the RRCNA approved Reading Recovery Conference
Instructional Strategies
- Be willing to learn acquire and apply new skills and knowledge
- Provide one-on-one instruction to four first-grade students for 30 minutes daily sessions if teacher-in-training five students thereafter
- Must serve a minimum of 8 one-to-one students during the school year
- Demonstrate effective teaching of students using Reading Recovery methods
- Maintain current daily records on all served students as a basis for planning instruction
- Possess the ability to interpret data using the Observation Survey Summary and Predictions of progress lesson records running records Record of Reading Vocabulary Developmental Reading Assessment and Texas Primary Reading Inventory
Implementation
- Communicate with the teacher leader parents first and second grade teachers and other school personnel on a regular basis for the purpose of student achievement and monitoring
- Submit data to the teacher leader as required
- Monitor the progress of discontinued students through grade 4
Professional Growth and Other
- Teach multiple small literacy groups consisting of 4-6 students in the first and second grade as assigned by the Teacher Leader
- Maintain accurate complete and correct records as required by law district policy and administrative regulation to accomplish instructional goals and objectives
- Attend Responsive to Intervention (RTI) meetings for students being served in the Reading Recovery program
- Serve as a resource for providing campus principals teachers and parents with information on reading development
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrators that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position
- Be a positive role model for students and support the goals of the school district
Communications
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with parents students principals Reading Recovery teachers and classroom teachers
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
- Maintain a professional demeanor in all district interactions
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise assigned teacher aide(s).
