Evening weekend distance education television and or off-campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Hana Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of the regular workload.
This is NOT a remote position the job requires in-person work.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supervise and assess students in examining patients for clinical signs and symptoms of oral pathology presence of dental caries compromising medical conditions and special needs.
- Evaluate the ability of students to plan their patients treatment and educational needs as they relate to the Dental Hygiene scope of practice.
- Evaluate the students skills in deposit removal decision-making preventive disease transmission restoration polishing sealant placement and the use of various treatment modalities.
- Audit patient charts and assess the students ability to maintain accurate records.
- Responsible for maintaining the highest academic standards in his/her particular discipline.
- Exercise professionalism in all activities related to the role of academician including those concerned with the various duties assigned by the Dental Hygiene Program Coordinator and any involvement with colleagues peers community and students.
- Provides instruction in the classroom for courses assigned.
- Provides instruction/supervision in clinical courses assigned.
- Prepare course syllabi grading and reports related to teaching and student progress
- Work under the supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
- May include instructional assignments involving distance education.
- Maintains current course syllabi for the dental hygiene program.
- Reviews new texts and recommends textbook selection and purchase for the dental hygiene program.
- Assists with the update of the appropriate curriculum & evaluation courses and program.
- Maintains current knowledge in teaching methodology.
- Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
- Other Duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
As listed below. All minimum qualifications must be from an accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available those not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) AND a current State of Hawaii License
OR
Masters Degree in Health or a Health-related field ANDa Bachelors Degree in Dental Hygiene ANDa current State of Hawaii License and certified in administration of intra-oral infiltration local anesthesia and intra-oral block anesthesia by an accredited Dental Hygiene school or by a certification program previously approved by the Board of Dental Examiners

Bachelors Degree in Dental Hygiene ANDthree (3) years related work experience ANDcurrently certified as a Dental Hygienist ANDa current State of Hawaii License AND certified in the administration of intra-oral infiltration local anesthesia and intra-oral block anesthesia by an accredited Dental Hygiene school or by a certification program previously approved by the Board of Dental Examiners
OR
Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene and a Bachelors Degree in any field ANDfive (5) years related work experience and registered as a Dental Hygienist ANDa current State of Hawaii License and certified in the administration of intra-oral infiltration local anesthesia and intra-oral block anesthesia by an accredited Dental Hygiene school or by a certification program previously approved by the Board of Dental Examiners.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Successful community college and or university teaching experience in the field
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students classroom learning activities
- Recent experience working with or as a Dental Hygienist
- Knowledge of curriculum development
- Experience in a community-based dental clinic.
- The ability to apply knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture to effectively collaborate with multicultural groups and individuals from diverse academic cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
