Position Overview
The Sterile Processing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the decontamination cleaning assembly sterilization and distribution of medical instruments and equipment to support safe and efficient patient care. This leadership role ensures compliance with hospital policies infection prevention standards and regulatory guidelines while supervising daily sterile processing operations in a fast-paced acute care environment.
Key Responsibilities
Sterile Processing Operations
- Oversee decontamination cleaning assembly sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment
- Ensure instruments and supplies are prepared and available for surgical and clinical procedures
- Monitor departmental workflow and operational efficiency
- Maintain compliance with infection prevention and sterilization protocols
Quality Control & Regulatory Compliance
- Perform and validate sterilization testing and quality assurance procedures
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards including:
- The Joint Commission (JC)
- OSHA
- CDC
- AAMI
- Maintain strict safety and infection control standards
Staff Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise sterile processing technicians and daily departmental operations
- Coordinate staffing schedules and workflow assignments
- Train mentor and onboard new employees
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing staff development
Instrument & Equipment Management
- Ensure proper maintenance tracking and availability of surgical instruments
- Coordinate instrumentation needs with surgical and clinical departments
- Monitor sterilization equipment and automated systems for functionality and compliance
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with surgical teams nursing staff and hospital departments to support efficient patient care
- Ensure timely surgical case readiness and operational communication
- Assist leadership with process improvement and operational initiatives
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or equivalent certification required
- Minimum 23 years of sterile processing experience required
- Strong knowledge of sterilization techniques infection control practices and equipment processing
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in sterile processing preferred
- Strong communication organizational and team leadership skills
- Experience with automated sterilization systems and hospital surgical workflows
