Job Summary

Position Summary

JOB SUMMARY:This role is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of faculty staff students and visitors by maintaining a secure and orderly environment. Police Officer duties include crime prevention and enforcement conducting criminal investigations overseeing traffic and parking operations coordinating emergency and disaster response efforts and providing a broad range of public safety services to the Gadsden State community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide foot and vehicular patrol of the campus
  • Respond to and investigate all incidents on campus including but not limited to motor vehicle accidents or criminal or college violations
  • Conduct complex misdemeanor and or felony investigations including but not limited to interviewing
victims suspects and offenders preparing photo lineups collecting evidence and preparing case files
  • Provide security to college community as requested including but not limited to escorting personnel to vehicles late at night or acting as a witness at meetings involving irate personnel or students
  • Enforce criminal and traffic laws making arrests and issuing summons as required
  • Secure college buildings
  • Issue tickets for parking violations
  • Complete detailed incident reports
  • Monitor authorized student activities for adherence to college policies
  • Lock and unlock offices and buildings as requested
  • Ensure appropriate transport of bank deposits for college business office
  • Escort dignitaries and provide executive security
  • Detect and report hazardous conditions including but not limited to potholes light outages obstructions etc
  • Complete twelve hours of continuing education annually as required by APOST and other training as designated by the Chief of Police
  • Lend security support to all campuses as requested
  • Assist as needed with issuing parking decals and student IDs
  • Collect and maintain lost and found property
  • Appear in court and testify as required
  • Assist and participate in emergency training drills and exercises
  • Monitor security cameras
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED certificate required
  • One year of experience as a police officer or similar work required
  • APOST Certification required
  • Current Alabama drivers license required
Associate degree preferred

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of city state and federal laws
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public in emergency situations
  • Must be available to work all shifts including day evening night and weekends
  • Certified in first aid/CPR
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Good physical condition and strength; ability to lift 50 pounds from the ground; ability to lift arms above the head
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs and climb up and down ladders
  • Ability to pass the weapons qualification requirement (APOST)
  • Ability to adapt to a work schedule rotation
Ability to obtain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification

Salary Calculation:For all positions on all Salary Schedules the salary amount for the selected applicant is determined by step placement on the applicable schedule. Step placement is dependent upon the following: (a) all full-time work experience in public education in Alabama and (b) all other full-time work experience outside of public education in Alabama that in the sole judgment of the College directly relates to the requirements of the position. The applicant selected for the position must provide written verification(s) of this full-time work experience within the time provided herein if such experience is to be considered in determining their initial step place on the Salary Schedule.
Format for Work Experience Verifications: Work experience verifications should be in the form of verification letters from employers and must include complete employment dates job title(s) job duties and an indication whether such employment was full-time or part-time and if part-time the average number of hours worked each week. The letters should be on official letterhead and contain an authorized personnel signature. The Colleges official employment verification form is also acceptable and is available upon request.
