Job Summary

DESCRIPTION

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular full-time position in the class of Senior Detention Officer at the Probation department.

THE POSITION

This is a peace officer classification under Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code. Under direct supervision and in accordance with guidelines and procedures incumbents are responsible for the supervision custodial care and limited counseling of a group of youth or adults placed under the jurisdiction of the County Probation Officer. Staff assignments are generally made to the Juvenile Detention Facility the Work Program and/or the Transportation Division.

Incumbents serve in a lead capacity and are expected to perform a variety of duties involved with the supervision custodial care and limited counseling of youth and adults. The senior is the lead of a shift and performs tasks as required including assuring the proper performance of duties assigned to staff during the shift by providing support back up and guidance where necessary. The Senior Detention Officer requires substantial independent judgment the performance of more complex and difficult tasks and the ability to independently coordinate and direct activities. Senior Detention Officers are issued and required to carry chemical agents while carrying out the primary functions of their employment. Positions assigned to the Work Program/Transportation shall be required to carry firearms. Incumbents must be willing to work irregular hours that may include working on shifts weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Age: At least 20 years of age; AND

Education: Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of college with major work preferably in the behavioral sciences: AND

Experience: One year of regular fulltime experience as a Detention Officer II in Yolo County or an equivalent position in another County Juvenile Hall or State Youth Authority Agency. (Related experience may be substituted for the required college education on a year for year basis);AND

Certificate: Successful completion of the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course provided by the CA Board of State and Community Correction - Standards and Training for Corrections Program.

License:Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California drivers license Class C or higher to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable addition incumbents must meet the qualifications for the Class B California drivers license when required by the job assignment.

Background Requirements: Incumbents in this classification are designated as peace officers in accordance with Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code. As such the applicant must meet the standards stipulated in Sections 1029-1031.5 of the Government Code which include the following:

Except under special circumstances shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or federal jurisdiction or of any offense in any state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this state. (Section 1029 California Government Code).
Shall have good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation. (Section 1031 California Government Code).
Through examination by a medical and psychiatric professional found to be free from any physical emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of powers of a peace officer. (Section 1031 California Government Code).
Be a citizen of the United States. (Section 1031.5 California Government Code).

Special Requirements:Incumbents must successfully complete 24 hours of annual training as certified by the California Board of Corrections. This requirement shall continue for as long as the Probation Department participates in the State Standards and Training Program. Detention Officers are required to attend training as prescribed by the Department and/or legally mandated for Management of Assaultive Behavior First Aid/CPR Chemical Agents and firearms.

Positions assigned to the Work Program/Transportation Division shall meet the training requirements and quarterly qualifications set forth in the California Penal Code and overseen by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Program for firearms.

Verification of Education

Acceptable forms of educational documentation are official or unofficial transcripts that list the students name institution name field of study and date the degree was awarded.

For recent graduateswho have not received proof of their degree yet a letter from the registrars office stating that all requirements for graduation have been met and listing the field of study will be sufficient proof of graduation.

All foreign transcripts or diplomas must be in English. If the institution does not provide these documents in English the applicant will need to provide a translation which has been done by a professional agency. The County of Yolo will accept education as equivalent to U.S. accreditation from Institutions that are listed as members of the International Association of Universities. You may check for your school by visiting the IAU web site ( who possess a degree or completed coursework that is not from an accredited college or university must submit one of the following:

1. A written statement from a U.S. accredited university or college that states that the applicant is qualified for entrance to a program of graduate studies for which a degree in a related field is required.

2. An evaluation of the applicants degree and coursework equivalency by a private organization that provides foreign credential evaluation services. The evaluation must include a comparison of comparable U.S. courses for content credit and grade.

Note: Foreign language documents must include a precise word-for-word English translation of all foreign language documents. It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the County that the applicant meets the specific requirements listed on the job announcement for each specific examination.
