Travis County Health and Human Services is a dynamic governmental agency that proudly serves the Austin/ Travis County community by helping people become self-sufficient and productive members of society.
The Work-Based Learning/Summer Youth Employment Program serves as a springboard for first-time job seekers aged 14 to 22 including those facing barriers to self-sufficiency by providing community-based workforce development training and fostering employee engagement. The program proactively addresses the vicious cycles of poverty through partnerships with local schools city and county government agencies and entities in both the public and private sectors. Each year it delivers career awareness and readiness programming to hundreds of middle and high school students.
The preferred candidate(s) must be responsible flexible hard-working ethical trustworthy sincere and willing to hold youth accountable for their choices.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the second in a series of three social services program-related job classifications within the Social Services job family. This classification is dedicated to work in a specific social services program or programs and is responsible for performing consultative technical and administrative work in the planning development implementation and monitoring of a social services program. This classification is distinguished from the Social Services Program Specialist Associate and is responsible for planning developing implementing and monitoring a program and serving as technical program expert and consultant. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a structured short-term engineering project suitable for participants ages 1418
- Facilitate daily program activities and provide instruction on introductory engineering concepts
- Guide participants through all phases of a project including concept development design building testing and final presentation
- Supervise and monitor participants to ensure a safe respectful and productive environment
- Provide ongoing support feedback and mentorship to participants
- Modify instructional approaches as needed to accommodate varying skill levels
- Maintain attendance engagement and accountability for assigned participants
- Coordinate with SYEP staff to support program goals reporting needs and overall operations
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in Social or Behavioral Sciences or a directly related field AND four (4) years experience in social services or a directly field;
OR
Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
Licenses Registrations Certifications or Special Requirements:
Documented background in engineering (degree in progress completed degree or relevant professional experience)
Strong organizational and time management skills
Must be available to work full-time from May 27 2026 July 31 2026.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work 40 hours per week during standard business hours for the duration of the program
- Knowledge of basic engineering principles and ability to apply them in a learning environment
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively to beginners
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Must be available to work full-time from May 27 2026 to July 31 2026.
Work Environment & Other Information
Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds occasionally visual acuity speech and hearing hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment. Subject to standing sitting walking climbing stairs bending stooping crouching kneeling pushing pulling reaching twisting balancing repetitive motion driving client/customer contact and squatting to perform the essential functions.
Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.
Work Hours: 8 am - 5 pm Monday-Friday.
