Job Summary

Yamhill County has one regular full-time position for a Veterans Service this role you will counsel advise and assist military service veterans and their dependents of their rights under Military Service Benefits Acts (and other relevant legislation) and in obtaining benefits provided by county state and federal laws. You will also provide administrative assistance in sensitive or critical program areas for elected or appointed officials. The amount of time spent on clerical versus veterans service officer duties varies during the cycle of the year and workload. Further as the Veterans Service Officer you will take on many roles from investigating and interviewing Veterans and their dependents to develop a case history working both in and out of the office setting working as a claims filer at times speaking at veterans organizations and being an advocate for those struggling to wade through the system.

The Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience as a Veterans Services Officer.
  • College-level course work or training in public administration or related area may substitute for up to one year of experience.
  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.
  • Accreditation as a Claims Agent with US Department of Veterans Affairs is required.
  • If you are not already accredited then you will need to gain accreditation. That includes passing an exam. The exam will be provided on May 19 or August 25 2026.
  • Preference will be given to those who already have Accreditation with US Department of Veterans Affairs as a Claims Agent.


Ability to secure and maintain a drivers license valid in the state of Oregon is required.

The Candidate:

As a successful candidate for this position you should have working knowledge of the following:


  • Current federal and state legislation programs and rules relating to benefits for military service veterans and their dependents.
  • Programs and activities of other agencies serving veterans.
  • Veterans benefit claims systems.


You should also be able to demonstrate your strong communication and interviewing skills. With the sensitive nature of the circumstances of many clients experience your ability to be tactful in creating and maintaining appropriate professional relationships with Veterans and their families is critical. Finally you will be expected to; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; write concise reports and make specific recommendations; and attend work as scheduled.
