Position Summary
Reporting to the Clinical Manager the Charge Nurse will provide strong leadership to the unit staff offer guidance and support support the flow of patients through a robust and active patient flow and discharge planning strategy while maintaining a focus on quality and patient safety.
The incumbent will act as a key resource in communication with patients families and caregivers as well as the nursing allied and physician staff. The Charge Nurse will support the ongoing use of standardized RAPID Rounds facilitate communication with the Patient Access and Flow Department other charge nurses in the organization and with management.
Primary Responsibilities
- Promotes unit flow by utilizing a standard rounding tool to facilitate discussions and problem-solving regarding unit and staffing concerns.
- In collaboration with interdisciplinary care team supports patients and families in the implementation BCHS Home First Philosophy.
- Supports with the development of care plans for patients and follows through with identified goals on a daily basis that support patient care and experience.
- Supports BCHSs bed capacity plan to facilitate patient flow throughout the organization.
- Supports an environment that promotes continuous quality improvement and staff engagement to achieve established clinical benchmarks and outcomes.
- Assists with monitoring and evaluating of clinical indicators professional practice quality checks and Required Safety Practices (RSPs) related to their unit and/or program
- Promotes a professional practice environment by mentoring and coaching staff to develop their clinical knowledge skill and judgement and identifies learning opportunities to appropriate supports.
- Supports the implementation of management decisions that affect clinical practice and unit operations in the clinical area.
- Mentors colleagues other nurses students and others as appropriate.
- Participates in quality performance improvement activities.
- Participates in strategic planning ad hoc projects and educational activities as assigned for the department. Communicates effectively with colleagues across BCHS to advance goal achievement.
- Demonstrates skill in navigating and communicating in a complex environment.
- Interacts with staff in an ethical consistent fair timely appropriate and decisive manner in accordance with BCHS policies.
- Identifies factors that affect staffs ability to fulfill their job responsibilities collaborates with management to effect appropriate change in systems.
Mandatory Qualifications
- BScN required
- Member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Masters degree in a relevant area preferred
- 3-5 years in (department specific) experience required
