Job Summary

Risk Associate Corporate Insurance Team

The Corporate Insurance team works to protect Capital One by partnering with internal clients and external experts to minimize risks through execution of world-class insurance risk management strategies.

As a Risk Associate you will be a vital supporter on the team focusing on how we buy and manage essential insurance policies for the entire company. This is a performing role in the Operational Risk Management organization where you will gain foundational experience in corporate insurance.

You will primarily help manage critical insurance programs especially those covering company leadership (management liability) and digital security (cyber liability). A significant part of your job also involves team support and organization including managing the teams budget processing insurance payments and executing quality control activities. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Team Operations & Organization: Help keep our team organized and running smoothly. This involves maintaining essential documents and digital files (like shared drives and the intranet page) helping prepare for internal audits by enhancing quality assurance (QA) processes and keeping our team standards up to date. You may also lead team meetings or meetings with our insurance broker

  • Financial & Budget Support: Act as a key point of contact for tracking all insurance payments and assisting with budget management. You will coordinate payment tracking with our insurance broker and finance teams

  • Claims Administration: Support the claims lead by managing the claims inbox. This includes reviewing incident reports reporting new claims (like workers compensation and general liability) into our system responding to questions from claim adjusters identifying loss trends and recommending methods of hazard remediation and participating in periodic claim reviews

  • Project Management for Policy Renewals: Help manage the yearly renewal of major insurance policies such as those for management liability and cyber risk. This involves tracking renewal milestones organizing data for the insurance broker coordinating meetings with internal partners or the insurance broker obtaining necessary leadership approvals and maintaining complete policy documentation

  • Insurance Documentation Management: Handle requests for official Certificates of Insurance (proof of coverage) from internal partners ensuring they are processed and tracked quickly and accurately

Characteristics Desired:

  • Strong written and spoken communication skills including comfort with delivering basic presentations.

  • A demonstrated analytical mindset and a passion for using data to solve problems

  • Willingness to learn and apply the fundamentals of insurance and risk management is essential to success in this role. (A background in the field is preferred but not required)

  • Resourceful curious and self-motivatedable to identify opportunities and take an idea from exploration through to completion

  • Exceptional teamwork and a genuine eagerness to devote time and energy to build trusting collaborative connections across the organization

  • The ability to work independently manage uncertainty and prioritize multiple tasks at the same time

  • A focus on attention to detail efficiency and striving for flawless execution in core responsibilities

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or military experience

  • At least 1 year of experience using Google Suite or Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in Risk Management Insurance Finance Accounting Law Communication or Business Administration.

  • 1 years of experience in a corporate environment focused on areas such as corporate insurance legal finance accounting project or process management communications governance quality assurance internal audit or operational risk management

  • Prior experience working in a corporate insurance department for an insurance broker or as a commercial insurance underwriter

  • Insurance or Risk Management-related certifications or designations; e.g. Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Associate in Risk Management (ARM)

  • Participation in the Gamma Iota Sigma insurance and risk management organization

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean VA: $81700 - $93300 for Risk Specialist


Richmond VA: $74200 - $84700 for Risk Specialist










Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidates offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
