About the role
AEMOs System Design division plays a central role in planning the power system as Australia undergoes rapid transformation. With the shift to renewable generation and widespread electrification the number of new transmission and distribution projects is growing fast.
With more than 160 GW of new generation set to connect over the next 30 years this role places you at the centre of Australias energy transition. You will help commission a wide range of technologies from wind solar and hydro to batteries storage systems and emerging hydrogen projects.
As Engineer Commissioning youll work closely with network service providers developers investors manufacturers consultants and government and regulatory bodies collaborating with some of the most respected experts in the industry. As the technical commissioning lead you will guide renewable projects through commissioning align new generation with NEM operational requirements and develop practical solutions to shared system and market challenges. Your work will directly improve the certainty efficiency and experience of the connections process.
The role offers opportunities to build strong longterm relationships across the energy sector mentor junior engineers and grow your industry profile through forums working groups and conferences.
Reporting to the Manager Commissioning this position can be based in any Australian state. AEMO is committed to flexible working and ensures all employees remain supported and connected through strong team culture and collaboration tools.
What you will be doing
- Lead the endtoend commissioning of renewable generation projects ensuring safe reliable progression to full output operation.
- Strengthen AEMOs technical collaboration with industry by resolving project issues constructively supporting factbased and transparent decisionmaking and reinforcing a serviceoriented partnershipdriven culture.
- Provide expert technical advice and pragmatic decisionmaking across performance standards power system stability system strength remediation registration and commissioning while mentoring project teams and stakeholders.
- Support regulatory and market developments that enable efficient integration of largescale renewable and storage technologies into the NEM and contribute to a coordinated framework for future connections.
- Prepare clear highquality communication for technical and nontechnical audiences and proactively enhance AEMOs reputation as a trusted partner to developers OEMs government NSPs market participants and customers.
What you will bring to the role
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related power systems discipline) supported by a wealth of commissioning experience across renewable generation and transmission/distribution projects.
- Proven capability in generator commissioning including holdpoint testing witnessing R2 compliance model validation and resolving generator and power system performance issues.
- Demonstrated experience leading and delivering small to medium technical projects applying a pragmatic serviceoriented and outcomefocused approach to problem solving.
- Strong stakeholder and negotiation skills with the ability to navigate complex technical issues across parties with differing commercial and operational priorities.
- Welldeveloped communication skills able to translate complex engineering concepts for nontechnical audiences alongside solid knowledge of the electricity industry NEM processes generator behaviour and network constraints.
