Under the supervision of the Nurse Director the Wound and Ostomy Program Coordinator assumes program specific leadership responsibilities that assist in managing human fiscal and other resources needed to support clinical nursing practice for patients with wound or ostomy needs. He/she works collaboratively with physicians and nursing to recommend specialized care for patients with wounds and ostomy concerns and is competent to make recommendations for wound/ostomy care for patients from neonatal to geriatric. He/she participates in operational management including budgeting managing supplies and safety issues.

  • Integrates evidence-based practice clinical expertise patients their family/designated care partner(s) preferences and cultural beliefs and values for delivery of optimal health care.
  • Partners with patients their family/designated care partner(s) in identifying learning needs and priorities and provides education in ways that is useful understandable and affirming.
  • In this role teaching and support is given to the patient and/or caregiver. She/He provides care for stomas complex wounds fistulae pressure ulcers and fecal and urinary incontinence. The CWON or CWOCN Nurse provides specialized knowledge and skill to assist physicians and nursing staff with the management and teaching of patients with complex skin care needs and guidance for selection of related product formulary.
  • Provides specialized knowledge and skill to assist physicians and nursing staff with the management and teaching of patients with ostomies or patients with complex skin care needs.
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice to deliver quality patient care.
  • The Certified Wound Continence and Ostomy Nurse provides mentoring for hospital staff in relation to these issues and assists in setting guidelines for patient care. These services and processes are performed in accordance with standards of care and hospital guidelines.
  • Leads coordinates and carries out a wound care shared governance committee which includes collection and reporting of data such as incidence prevalence and pressure injury prevention interventions.
  • Conducts product review related to wound and ostomy care collecting recommendations evaluations and development of protocols for utilization.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education - Required

  • Bachelors Degree Nursing

Education - Preferred

  • Masters Degree Nursing

Experience - Required

  • 2 years as Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse

Experience - Preferred

  • 1 year of supervisory experience

Knowledge Skills and Abilities - Required

  • Demonstrates effective use of conflict resolution skills as necessary to ensure timely resolution of issues.
  • Demonstrates efficient prioritization and time management skills.
  • Computer skills (Word Excel PowerPoint EMR) excellent oral and written communication skills customer satisfaction problem solving organizational skills and knowledge of relevant software and hardware.
  • Must be able to work day schedule of (5) 8 hour shifts with every 5th weekend requirement.

Licenses and Certifications - Required

  • BLS - Basic Life Support AHA - American Heart Association
  • CWON - Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse - Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board or
  • CWOCN - Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse - Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board
  • RN - Licensed Registered Nurse
