Deputy Sports Editor

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an editor to help shepherd our Sports coverage.

Youll edit must-read stories about the most dynamic people and institutions in sports. This job will help guide the Journals distinctive sports coverage which has an authoritative voice that breaks news tells impactful stories and reacts quickly taking a unique perspective on some of the worlds most popular events. WSJ Sports specializes in unexpected stories that speak to both hard-core fans and readers who dont think of themselves as sports nuts. We are looking for an editor who can find new ways of looking at sports whether it be for the casual fan or the diehard loyalists.

Candidates should be experienced editors comfortable juggling breaking news on big games with quick-turnaround deadlines as well as deeper enterprise reporting on the major issues animating sports fans all over the world.

You have:

  • Impeccable writing and editing skills.

  • A knack for distilling complex ideas into simple terms and captivating stories.

  • Creative ideas for telling stories in new ways and formats.

  • A keen sense of the Journals audience and laser-focus on distinctive journalism.

  • The ability to exercise news judgment under intense pressure.

  • A track record of handling breaking news on deadline.

  • The drive to coordinate with teams across the newsroom to bring big stories to life.

  • Bulletproof fast-moving news stories on deadline with sourcing legal and ethical considerations and have familiarity with the level of rigor required to meet newsroom standards for publishing.

  • Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of the Wall Street Journal and WSJ. Magazine are consistently met: that work is of impeccable quality across all platforms and that The Journals codes of conduct and overall Standards & Ethics rules are scrupulously met.

Requirements:

  • 4-8 years editing experience. Experienced reporters with exceptional writing skills are also encouraged to apply.

  • The ability to use digital-publishing tools to produce engaging journalism across the Journals publishing platforms.

  • A deep interest in Sports and the ability to speak knowledgeably across disciplines.

  • Exceptional display skills and a sophisticated understanding of how to grab audience attention across platforms.

  • A sense of humor including a demonstrated ability to find clever intelligent ways into stories that are being widely covered.

  • A talent for writing snappy attention-grabbing headlines.

  • A sharp eye for story framing.

  • The ability to write stories on occasion.

  • A meticulous approach to getting facts and details exactly right knowing how to push your team to avoid errors and bulletproof high-profile visible stories with an attention to detail.

  • Visual thinking and a vested interest in how your stories will look and present across platforms.

  • A collaborative team-player attitude an upbeat outlook and an entrepreneurial spirit as we grow and evolve coverage needs.

  • Flexibility to be available on nights and weekends when required.

This position is based in New York and reports to Sports Editor Joshua Robinson.

Base Pay Range: 120000 - 145000
