About the Department
The mission of the Department of Protection Service is to protect our staff patrons facility and art. We operate a preventative security program using a vast array of overt and covert tools techniques training and technology. Collaboration with museum staff and external partners are the cornerstone of the departments security mission.
Position Summary
Provide security leadership at residence halls academic buildings and events. Develop and maintain a welcoming and safe environment for students faculty and staff. Conduct patrols in-person and virtually respond to incidents and assist community members in the residence halls and other assigned areas on campus. Work closely with Residence Life Student Affairs Facilities and other campus departments. This position works evenings weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities
Residence Hall Coverage
- Patrols an assigned residence hall by making rounds on every floor.
- Performs health and safety inspections at residence halls.
- Assists student/Professional Staff when needed.
- Be a first-responder during incidents.
- Participate in regular fire drills and safety training sessions.
- Leads building evacuations at residence halls.
- Provides focused security coverage for residence hall events.
- Staying informed about residence hall policies and procedures.
- Advise residence hall students on procedures with the Chicago Police Department.
- Familiarity with first aid kits and knowing how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Help facilitate educational programs related to residential safety.
Access Control
- Protects all personnel and physical assets at SAIC.
- Utilizes security cameras alarms communications and DAX when necessary.
- Prevents misappropriation of SAIC property.
- Knows all campus security policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with emergency procedures and equipment.
- Cooperates with outside law enforcement agencies.
Secondary / Periodic Duties
- Serves as a shift manager in the absence of the Security Manager.
- Acts as the supervisor during protection or event details.
- Creates incident reports.
- Provides immediate medical assistance when needed.
- Assists with the initiation of investigations.
- Inspects and test duress buttons.
- Assists the security systems integrator with special projects of security function in the activity.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Maintains current First Aid CPR and AED certifications.
Qualifications
- Associates degree preferred.
- Must have at least 1-3 years security experience; preferably in a campus environment.
- Must possess superior customer service skills.
- Proficiency with two-way radios backup chargers or PA systems to receive and relay instructions.
- Ability to manage challenging visitors employees and situations.
- Proven ability to think and make appropriate decisions/judgments on his/her own.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies stressful and impromptu situations.
- Must have strong verbal skills written skills and good interpersonal skills.
- Excellent public relations and diplomatic skills required.
- Must be computer literate and proven knowledgeable in Microsoft Office applications/programs.
- Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
- Ability to address and resolve conflicts.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically able to respond to alarms and/or emergencies.
- Must be physically able to stand walk and sit over 2/3 of a shift.
- Must be able to climb straight ladders and steeper stairs up to 1/3 of time during a shift.
- Ability to perform prolonged standing walking on ramps climbing and walking through narrow passageways
- Must be able to bend to reach controls to lock/unlock doors and look under desks
- Must be able to squat and/or kneel to unlock doors and assist patrons and/or employees in an emergency.
- Must be able to lift and/or carry an up to 75 pounds as needed on night shift and up to 50 pounds during the day shift.
- Must be able to exert 50 -100 lbs. of force occasionally 25 50 lbs. frequently or up to 10 20 lbs. constantly.
- Exposure to all climatic conditions when walking between campus buildings.
- Seeing hearing speaking and writing clearly to communicate with employees and clients.
- Observe and report incidents.
- Direct and delegate others.
